Official: BMW F80 M3 / F82 M4 Brings Back the Inline 6 Engine - BMW 3-Series Forum (F30 / F32) | F30POST

We can finally confirm that the next generation M3 (F80 / F82) will be powered by an inline 6 cylinder engine. We spoke to the President of BMW North America, Mr. Ludwig Willisch, at a current BMW event and he has officially confirmed that the next generation M3's engine will indeed feature an inline 6 layout and not a V6.

Until now, there has been no official confirmation (nor denial) from BMW on whether the F80 sedan and F82 coupe's motor would feature an I6 or rumored V6 configuration (although it's been all but a foregone conclusion that it will utilize forced induction by way of turbos).

Mr. Willisch added that a V6 configuration was previously considered (including whether a motor based on the current M3's S65 engine minus two cylinders was appropriate), but ultimately ruled out.

Whether the F80 M3's inline 6 will feature two or three turbos remains to be seen. An earlier BMW filed turbo patent shows that the company has developed (or is developing) electric turbo technology; so a bi-turbo or tri-turbo inline 6 engine could possibly see the implementation of one or more electric turbos. However many turbos is ultimately decided upon by BMW, we think that its power figure may be somewhere in the ballpark of 450 HP.

Despite the next M3 sedan being at least 1.5 to 2 years away, we now know the following. It will be:

  • Lighter than current M3
  • Faster than current M3
  • More powerful than current M3
  • More efficient than current M3
  • Powered by an inline 6 cylinder [turbo] engine
  • Offered with optional or standard manual transmission (if previous spy photos are any indication)
  • Introduced no earlier than late 2013 - early 2014

Re: It's official: New M3 will be inLine-6

so what's the difference between the 335 and the m3, besides higher boost pressure and handling?

Re: It's official: New M3 will be inLine-6

So the main difference between 1M and M3 will be bi-turbo and tri-turbo? Both use inline 6 as platform.

Should we be keeping the M3 V8 and M5 V10? Reckon the values for these cars should go up.

Re: It's official: New M3 will be inLine-6

its old news already.. it's gonna be twin turbo.. no powerdome unlike the previous M3s.. and fenders doesn't seem much wider....

Re: It's official: New M3 will be inLine-6

Rocks.............

cheers

Re: It's official: New M3 will be inLine-6

In other markets, the N/A E9X M3 (and V10 E60 M5) would be worth keeping... last of its kind, etc. But not in this town with the COE :fineprin:

The more i hear, the more i am concerned. M seems to be cutting cost and eliminating bespoke M engines. If they simply slap a tuned up version of the N55/N54 onto the next M3, i am voting with my feet! M cars need to have kick ass engine to be special. A simple twin turbo layout isn't gonna be able to deliver the 450bhp without any lag. This is starting to look like the anticipation and disappointment i went through with the 1M...

honestly, after looking at the information, me n my fren were not impressed by the specs and looks of the new M3.. Hopefully, it wld be more impressive upon testdrive.. but being 2 cylinders fewer and 1000 cc lesser.. the current M3 may be more fun.. definitely sound wise, its gonna be way better than the inline 6.

Re: It's official: New M3 will be inLine-6

M3 V8 engine still da best!

I hope i can keep mine long, long.....

The sound of the S65 is dope. Until S65/S85 came along, no BMWs have ever sounded this exotic. I am finding it very hard to let go of my M3 becos of that. I am very sad that superb engines like the S65/S85 only last a generation. Let's hope when M gets to do their own car, they will re-deploy those engines again...

Confirm won't be same cos turbos will mute the engine note.

Re: It's official: New M3 will be inLine-6

BMW seems to be heading wrong way...M division sounds like Mass division...common...no uniqueness...tweak abit and then call it M...less character...profit maximisation in mind to milk the current production line...in fact, the new 3 series...imo...doesnt look all tt great or diff from the previous model...just like Porsche..refresh a bit and name it new series or model...

maybe the way to go round w this kind BS technology is to switch btw brands every 3 yrs..so at least u feel u get a new car

Re: It's official: New M3 will be inLine-6

To me M Performance is BMW's worst idea: it mocks the regular line-up... which is not to be sniffed at vis-à-vis Mercedes et al... and dilutes the ///M premium.
