Hello ......

I am currently driving a 2004 318i 4 doors and just passed the 3 year warranty mark. I would like to appeal to any expert out there to share your views on either drop-in filter Hurricane or K&N and Cold Air Intake .

1. What are the differences between the two types in terms of performance like power, torque, fuel efficiency etc ....

2. Where to get ? Tried the K&N web, but couldn't find the part nos for the drop in filter type.

Lastly , anyone keen on selling pls pm or sms me 81610008. Thanks for reading....

Re: K&N drop-in filter or CAI

Yours should be a 2004 318i FL model like mine.

I am using a K&N 2232.

If drop-in, i think should be Shimota ?

Re: K&N drop-in filter or CAI

Thanks .... I checked fm K&N web, 2232 seems like an external and not the filter element type. Kindly confirm .... Btw, do u get better results with this simple change ? thanks

Re: K&N drop-in filter or CAI

actually i haven't change, the k&n still inside the workshop. but heard from a bimmer forumer, Ben, he was better horsepower and improve F/C.

i hope it works that way. :)

Re: K&N drop-in filter or CAI

CAI open-pod like simota might suffer a little bit of drop in low-end..not that i notice actually but since some people say so...maybe it's true..high end you can feel improvement but again dont expect phenomenal changes...maybe a tad more?

however, simota is pretty loud so it really depends what you want...K&N i have no idea but do a search lots of previous discussions

My advice is drop in is good enough, without a good heat shield for open pod u will suffer in low end big time, and the KNN replacement for ur car is the Cone type. My friend have a used one to let go, about 7 months old. Selling at $80 with a brand new cleaning kit and oil. Do PM me if u interested.

Re: K&N drop-in filter or CAI

I have used the K&N filter before to replace the standard paper filter. There is no way I can feel the improvement in the power but I can vouch for the improvement in the fuel consumption. I did several checks and I can confirm that the K&N filter did give me 5% improvement in fuel consumption. With that sort of improvement, you will get your money back within a few months of usage.
The K&N filter is a simple, drop-in filter. It replaces the standard paper filter which, after about 5'000 km is almost down to 60% efficiency, according to some studies.
It is not a modification and there is no increase in intake noise, etc.
