There is definitely a difference. Air is needed for combustion and with a vacuum created behind the filter for NA cars, the performance is not really there. Hence majority are going into supercharge and turbocharge to beef up on power. This alone is the key contribution to improve power on same capacity of displacement.
Imagine you run ippt with your thick towel over your mouth and nose compare to a thin piece tissue paper. You run better with the thin tissue paper. Engine wont be starvation of air hence pickup is a lot better. Or maybe there are sometimes drivers are not too sensitive to power difference if they are always driving with hard acceleration.
