Re: late e39 520: a good buy?

serious. last timesome one told him an embassy E34 wanna scrapped, so we took over his "bullet proof" window.

when my dad drove to JB, someone wanted to rob him and fired a shot, the bullet shot right thru. the driver was hurt.

question, if not bullet proof, the windscreen will shatter? coz our windscreen only one bullet hole. if u know what i mean.

I'm worried though because when i l.ooked at the service booklet, only the first oil change was "stamped" on the booklet... with no record of Inspection 1 or 2. Is this common? Usual, PML would stamp that if the car was serviced there right? or would it just be recorded on the computer
Are any of the maintenance green/orange/red indicators still lit? Is the oilservice light on? Most owners seem to have a tendency to service at PML during the first 3 years because of the warranty, so maybe you should ask the sellers to get the service books updated.

If the cars were serviced at any of the usual independent BMW specialists instead of at PML, then shouldn't be any problem. Those shops usually don't call it "Inspection I" or "Inspection II" although the scope of work is similar.

Haven't said that, I have seen some cars driven to death still running their original oil and filters after 3 years... If you are paying a premium price for a premium product, then better to wait for the right car to come by. Higher mileage with regular servicing is better than lower mileage with little or no servicing, and better than 80k km with only one oil change.

Cars i've seen have their "orange" lights still lit (ranging from four to two). Having owned a bmw before, i know green bars is the best and mean you just had the car serviced. What does orange mean? does it mean service is due?

Re: late e39 520: a good buy?

I agree with the positive comments made on the e39 520i as I have one of the late models as well. I'm surprised why nobody commented on the fact that the e39 has a sportier engine note as compared to the e60? I tried the e60 520i (same engine as my e39) when it first came out and I was surprised at how much quieter the new car is! Anyone has the same impression? Sound wise, I prefer the e39 to the e60.

Correct bro...the E60 has been extra padded to sieve out noise

and drive-feel, I take the E39 anytime

nick, shd've a e39 meet-up, no?

Re: late e39 520: a good buy?

E39 much better at ride and handling than E60.

I put that down partially to run flat tyres and partially to the changes made to an almost perfect car and was unbeatable throughout its production run.

"What Car" Executive car of the year for 7 years running - stunning record given how many tried to emulate it. The E60, for all its comfort features and gizmo's, still falls behind the E39 as a driver's car.

Well, the run flats can always be changed... in fact, just take a look at the GREAT WHITE..... but that's a small matter of changing rims/tyres.....

I think the E39 is a classic car.... only problem I would have with it is the space...... I nearly bought one some time ago..... and the 520 was really underpowered......

Nevertheless, a nice car.....

SB, can't agree more with what you've said. stock vs stock 520s, e39 would've an edge over the e60 in terms of handling. imo, another obvious difference its their appearance, so much easier to accept the e39 looks as opposed to the e60. it took awhile in getting used to its looks.

options wise, was pretty shock to see so basics that it has to offer, which was the reasons why i went with the e39 at that point of time.

Power wise, e60 with its 6-speed gear would have an edge on pick-up but at the end of it, is as sluglish factoring in similar engine displacement & almost the same weight as the e39.

Having seen wilson's set-up & driven his e60 a couple of times, very neat i must say & entry level has to be a 525 for the e60.

Re: late e39 520: a good buy?

Well, the difference between the 523 and the 525 is about $40k..... that's alot considering it has the same engine block...... However, saying that, the 525 does have Active Steering, GPS, Sports Steering Wheel, Adaptive Lights and bigger rims....... But is that worth $40k???

Up to you to decide.....

Re: late e39 520: a good buy?

For all you e39 owners out there, can you guys share:

1. Have you done inspection II yet? at what mileage?
2. During the inspection II, were there recommendations made by PML or other workshop for major change of parts?

thanks.

For InspectionII, the normal wear tear stuff would have been changed if you are a discerning owner, like

1. Brake pads and discs
2. Belts, esp the main one running he air-con and sth else
3. Radiator, would have leaked
4. fluids
5. Possibly your bushings and arms as well

It is done at 100k, but your meter would have asked you to go in at 95k, depends on driving style.

Re: late e39 520: a good buy?

Going on 4.5yrs, the drive is still a joy to me. No regrets getting the E39

Having clocked 100k, I have changed 4 brake pads, 2 disc, 2 control arm, engine mounting, 2 shock absorbers as well as a belt. If i remember correctly, to get those fixed cost about $1800 by external workshops. These are the parts that would bring comfort back to your drive which are very important for me.

So it would be worth your while to give her a new lease of live by changing the worn out parts and make her livelier once again. Besides, the depreciation for a used E39 is really worth it. You will enjoy it.

Re: late e39 520: a good buy?

DAve, i also dont like to see my friends drive stock standard E39 "on the outside". :p

Bro,
Go for it , good buy , I'm having my 3rd e39 since year 2002. Never get sick of it. Of course need some minor mod up.
Cheers

Re: late e39 520: a good buy?

Maybe it's me.....all stock bimmers are towards comfort base.....driven both stock E39 & stock E60....both just too soft & comfy for my liking....

After owning my E60 for 2.5 months.....I'm liking the AFS more & more, makes driving a big car alot easier & parking it it's a breeze......

yet to test out my car in Sepang to see how I can adapt to the AFS when tracking......did some spirited drive recently with xxxkm/h sweeper & certain 'moves' thru traffic.....it's fabulous!

That's after my H&R ARBs & PSS9 lah.......stock setup sux.......kekekeke

Cheers
