Loud Exhaust sound on start - Normal?

Dear F30s,

Do you encounter this problem when you start your car and the exhaust loud is really loud, like motorboat! and then the gear shifting is not very smooth as exiting carpark.... like the rpm will drag on the 1st gear before switching to 2nd gear.

Is this normal? After driving a while, everything OK? Is it because of cold start? but then again..... at this time and age... never encounter this on my previous Jap cars... hahaa.... normal? Anyone have such an issue too?

YES! i believe the loud exhaust is due to the engine holding higher RPM's to warm up the engine (cold start). I also experience the 1st to 2nd gear feeling hesitant to change only during this period (or in Eco-Pro mode). from day 1 until now like that, so i guess its normal.

Was previously on a lexus GS300, which is the same for cold starts but gear shifts were much smoother than my current BMW. But it's like comparing an apple vs an orange.

i thought cold starts are to warm up the cat converter

Yes that's common for cold start. I usually won't drive (i.e. Engage gear) until the rpm drop to normal level. By doing so the gear engagement will be smooth.

*****UPDATE*****

Sent my car in for servicing at PML earlier last week and asked them if they could do anything about it. They returned the car with a "transmission software update" and actually the car does not have that hesitancy to change gear in car parks on cold start anymore. Car is definitely able to pick up better in Eco Pro mode as well. So maybe you guys might want to check with your SA during your next servicing!

no wonder my bro's f30 really noisy when cold start and even noiser with quad exhaust
