Loud rotation noise - Tyres, or wheel or any?

Hi Huys,

Need your help on the following.

I am having 318 sport edition with 225/45/17 for front wheel and 245/40/17 for rear. Currently it is about 30K milleage. Recently, the noise level from outside (likely the tyres) is getting louder. Not sure it is due to the tyres or wheels or something else.

1) How can I confirm the source of the noise? Since I cannot do tyre rotation, can I take it for wheel alignment instead.
2) The stock tyres is Continental CSC2 and all tyres threads still looks good. If the problem is the tyres, then what is the recommended brand/model for replacement (if I wanna to maintain tee same size)
3) Any recommended shop that I can get the same CSC2 stock tyres.
4) Lastly, do you think the noise is caused by the tyre pressure?

Heaps thanks..

Re: Loud rotation noise - Tyres, or wheel or any?

If the noise is a newly developed on without any changes to the tyres or wheel, then the likelyhood is that the rear wheel bearing is giving up

The sydrom of rear wheel bearing giving up is that u will hear a humming noise similiar to that of road noise which will gradually come in from about 50kph to 100kph. Once below that, the noise will dissapear.

The other thing may be due to aging tyres for CSC tyres are quite "hard" tyres and may be louder. Try to see if u can find someone to do a temporary swap for u to see if the noise is still there.

But IMHO, go back to PML since ur car should still be under warranty. If confirmed to be wheel bearing, get it replaced cos the labour is not cheap..

Cheers

Hi Macnoodle, are you sure the stock tyres are CSC2? Coz mine came with CSC and not CSC2. If it is CSC, apart from any possible issue with the wheel bearing, the CSCs are NOT a quiet tyre. In fact, they manage to combine relatively high noise with poor grip. If yours are CSC, I would strongly suggest not getting them again. I changed to Eagle F1 GS-D3 are they are much better.

you have the same problem as me... riginal conti sport.. after about 35k km, tire noise starts to come... time to change tires dude....

What to change to i dun want to comment... thats up to you..

Re: Loud rotation noise - Tyres, or wheel or any?

Hi Macnoodle,

I drove the exact same car with same spec as you and having identical problem..... I can hear a humming rotating sound which follows the speed of the car when its speed is between 40km/h to 80km/h. This is if the accelerator pedal has been released and cruising. Once I I step on the accelerator, sound seems to disappears.

I recently tweak the type pressure according to the manufacturer's recommendation, ie 2.0bar in front and 2.3 bar at the rear. Sound seems to be lesser... however still not satisfied. Hopefully not wheel bearing.

You wanna meet up and we try each other's car to comment.....

Re: Loud rotation noise - Tyres, or wheel or any?

I too am hearing a noice, which I hope is only tire noise. My tires will need replacing soon, so hopefully that will solve the issue. Odd thing about the noise I hear, which closest I can explain is it sounds like a fan, is that I cannot hear it when I drive with the windows down. This to me leads me to believe it's not tire noise and somthing within or under the car, and closed windows permit the sound to resonate.

Likely to go with Goodyear Eagle F1 - In a recent tire test, tested on an e46, they came out on top for overall grip wet and dry as well as reasonable tire noise. Anyone got these on their ride and care to share feelings ?

I hv no experience with F1 GS-D3 but by the look of the tread design which is V's all the way and big cuts, this type of tires should be very noisy when wearing out....

Ever thot of trying out Michelin Preceda II ? Seems a decent tire, close transfer of technology from its biggest brother PS2 :)

Thanks the input. I will be considering those as well. When I was looking at the tires I wondered how that V-tread would work in terms of performance and noise. From a novice point of view it certainly looks great for wet, as it should shed water quickly. I'd have thought the V shape would also be good for noise, as should eliminate pounding.

The big question. Use this tire change as an excuse to upgrade wheel size from current 16 inchers, or just stick with what I got. It's only an e46 318i I have, so I dont have any fantasies about high performance. Besides, where can one go fast in Singapore ? Previously I have a 328i and usually did 160-180kmh on the highway (no, not here in lovely S'pore) and now I'm lucky if I break 100kmh. So priority now is wet performance as it's certainly very wet here in Singapore :(

Re: Loud rotation noise - Tyres, or wheel or any?

OK, solved my noise. It was not the tires, but the rear wheel bearings. So had those replaced this past Saturday for $250 all inclusive, which was less than I had expected from reading other members suggestion that this was an over the top expensive job. So will wait a few weeks now until I replace my tires with Goodyear F1's and hopefully that should reduce my current tire noise (at least until the F1's wear out down the road)

F1 gsd3 is a good tyre but i had a friend who used it before said the mileage is very low.i wonder if its true.

Re: Loud rotation noise - Tyres, or wheel or any?

larrybud,

I though 318 Sports Edition are mainly of year 2004 with a warranty of 3 years.

I had my rear bearing replaced by PML under warranty. But the noise came on soon and I replaced with Bridgestore GR 80.

Now very happy with it.

Re: Loud rotation noise - Tyres, or wheel or any?

Hi all,

Finally I have replaced all 4 tyres to F1 GS-D3. It solved the noise issue and it was not caused by bearing.

Also, I did not have time to source for other type of wheels & tyres. Hope the tyre is ok for normal drive. :)

its a bloody good performance tyre for the money imho
