Sourcing for info on M42 cams, shrick or Hiop.

so far the info i've gathered is that there are sport cams and race cams with the sport being less aggressive.

At this point in time, trying to learn more about changing cams, What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this mod?

Since the engine will be opened up at this point, any other stuff that might be good to put in along with the cams to work together? (dun say DASC)

And most important'y, anyone can point me in the right direction to anywhere that sells or brings em in locally?

thanks ya'll

This is my theory on cams. Get a cam book, go to the bottom of the page (usually the biggest cam they make) and order it.

check the race came lobe lift, may need to flycut your pistons for valve clearance, although i doubt there would be a large enough cam for a BMW engine to need that.

Disadvantage? I cant think of any, except the fact you may now need to change things like fuel pumps and injectors to get the most out of the engine. Headers and good exhaust is also needed. The may as well have the head machined for more compression and do some cleaning up of the ports etc. Then may have to, in fact have to remap the ecu.

oh wait, all that is an advantage!

Re: M42 HIOP / Schrick Cams *Help*

I am using shrick cams in my M42 engine.

Changing camshafts have its pros and cons. If you use more aggressive cams, you ger more top end power but you lose bottom end. This means that at low revs 1-2K RPM, you will feel that the engine is quite dead and idle may be rough. Once you get to higher revs, you will feel the engine become more lively and pulls harder.

However, you can't just change the cams alone and expect more power. The ECU has to be remapped in order to take advantage of the cams and try to extract more at low end so the engine won't feel so dead.

bro, wher did u get the cams and at wat costs? thnx man!
I didn't actually bought the cams. It came with the car as previous owner replaced the cams.

And the engine does not need to be "opened" up to install camshafts, only the crankcase needs to be removed. The block stays and so does the head.

on OHC engines the valvecovers need to come off that's about it. the crankcase doesn't need to be opened up or removed.

there are definite downsides to getting a cam too big. loss of low end power, loss of vacuum for assisted brakes, poor idle, quicker wear on lifters and springs, etc

poor idle is the best part Shaun!! hehe

toughest cam at the drive in!!
