A MAN with criminal records for violence and drugs was jailed six months yesterday for being in a group that beat up a Ferrari owner and his passenger behind Orchard Towers.
Former warehouse assistant Roslan Abdullah, 43, who pleaded guilty, is the first member of the unlawful assembly tobe sentenced for the March 25 incident.
The pair in the Ferrari were left bruised and bleeding.
Five men have been charged; another two are at large. A second member of the group, Saifiol Rumli, 33, will be sentenced on Monday.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Winston Man said Mr Lim Yak Keng, 43, was leaving Orchard Towers in his sports car with Mr Soh Sau Kin, 39, at 5.20am, after partying. At the zebra crossing on Claymore Drive, Mr Lim nearly hit two women, one of them, Roslan's fiancee.
One of the women shouted at Mr Lim, who got out and verbally abused the women in response.
Two men who were walking behind the women, Yusri Yusoff, 39, and Mohammad Saddan Yusoff, 21, together with at least two unknown men, approached Mr Lim. A fight ensued.
Roslan was then in Peyton Place, a nearby lounge.
Meanwhile, outside, Yusri allegedly shouted at Mr Lim: "You drive Ferrari, you can do anything you like?"
Mr Lim, who was being beaten up, fell, but stood up to continue the scuffle. At this point, Mr Soh got out of the car to help him.
Roslan's fiancee ran into Peyton Place to tell him what was happening. Roslan and two others then joined in.
DPP Man said Mr Soh punched Yusri. Roslan and three others then kicked and punched him until he collapsed. They let up only when Saifiol signalled to the group to leave the scene.
Before fleeing, Roslan whacked the bonnet of the Ferrari and kicked it several times.
Seeking a deterrent sentence, DPP Man said the prolonged assault on Mr Soh, the fact that it took place in public and the accused persons' disregard for law and public order were aggravating factors.
A video shot by a passer-by and CCTV footage from the police were played in court.
The DPP noted Roslan's record of violence, and that his participation in the scuffle came shortly after his prison stint for drug consumption.
Criminal Legal Aid Scheme-appointed lawyer Rajan Supramaniam said his client, a divorcee, was sorry about having lost his temper when Mr Soh punched Yusri.
Mr Supramaniam said the facts showed Mr Lim and Mr Soh to have been "equally aggressive".
