Michelin Pilot Super Sports for M3

Fitted 255/35/R19 and 275/35/R19 PSS to my M3 some time back. Some of you will know that this isn't stock size but I didn't have a choice as the stock sizes were out of stock when I needed to change the tyres. The rears were down to minimum thread wear indicator after 8000km and the front tires shoulders were shredded.

It has drastically change the handling characteristic of the car. Where previously, with the PS2, it will tend to towards understeer when charging too fast into a turn, now it has been transformed into oversteer. Definitely, I have been getting more mid bend oversteer (traction control off), where before it was seldom encountered on street and b road drives. Before, some of you tell me it is power oversteer, I assure you, that I was not on the throttle when it happened. Plus, it is easily reproduced.
There is no doubt, based on many instrumented tests and reviews published online that the PSS is superior to the PS2 in the dry, but I must caution all PSS user to be careful in the wet or even moist conditions. There wasn't that big a disparity between dry and wet performance for the PS2, but the PSS has such improved dry traction that it can result in shocking moments when the roads are wet. I feel that the PSS technology has made little headway in the wet, especially braking. I have quite a few close shaves already. Please manage expectations if the road is wet and do not expect the phenomenal performance that the tyre delivers when wet.
PSS seems to need higher operating temperatures for peak performance compared to PS2. I get hilarious power oversteer for turn 1, 2, 4, 8, 9 at Sepang on the out lap from the pits until things warm up where I can begin to put more power down, earlier. The tires were already hot from the drive up so they are not exactly at ambient temperature coming out from the pits. So, I think it is not possible to reach that kind of tyres temperatures required for max performance during street driving (assuming Sepang weather conditions are similar to local).
Also, PSS seems noisier than PS2.

I can't wait to try the Continental CSC 5P as a comparison.

Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sports for M3

im using 18" PSS so far no issues. Feels more comfy than PS2 n wet roads also no problem. The only tire i had problem in wet weather was BS RE070... partly my fault goin too fast.

Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sports for M3

unsure how long ago since you installed the PSS.... but do note that PSS do have a 500km 'initial scrub in' period.... the tires are slippery esp more in the wet. the reseller did not tell me...but some of the overseas car forums and vagsg did mention....

after that... all should be good.

I had 245/35/19 & 275/35/19 PSS on my ZCP shod Yam3, great drive, no issues in the wet....

I am now running 245/35/19 & 275/30/19 PSS on my AM鸡 wheels.... also no issues.

are you driving with traction control off in the wet???? :screwedu::screwedu::screwedu:

Yay! Ou Xiang, you are an inspiration for those of us who do not have the time to go to Sepang, who cannot afford M3s or premium 19" wheels and tires, and do not have the skill and guts to find the under and oversteer limits on public roads.

Funny how I remember reading on another forum that the PSS did not have mold release compound on the surface because they are made from special molds, therefore they don't need a scrub in. Anyway, I have been on the PSS for 3000km already.
I drive with traction control off because I am a highly skilled hooligan with little consideration for other people's properties and safety. I da man's man! Plus I heard chicks dig it.

I love you too. The limits find me not the other way round.
When do you want to find the limits of my SLK? I wonder what tyres they come with.

About $3400+ for all four corners at Hurry.

Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sports for M3

i believe Top93 is having a promo now whereby the prices are really too ridiculous to post. i just went to change my rear 2 tires there just now. pls dont pm me, rather CALL them for the price. its REALLY VERY CHEAP

needless to say, its a LOT less than $3,400 for 4 pc.

Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sports for M3

I got the same "ridiculous" price from another well known shop.

Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sports for M3

i got mine from Leong Seng, lower than Hurry's price significantly.

Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sports for M3

My bad.
I was charged $700 for rears and $500 for front.
Total was $2400 at Hurry.

I recently changed my tyres (F: 235/35/19 R: 265/30/19) with Ace Tyres for $1900 with all the usual after-sales service thrown in.

Cheers!

Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sports for M3

I can advise that Top93 is less than that for 245/35/19 and 275/35/19

Re: Michelin Pilot Super Sports for M3

if grip is required for a car with big power, aquaplaning issue is secondary. Just drive slow when roads are wet.
