The other thing is one could have a mid or rear engine RWD car that has a pretty intrusive stability control systems that if not turned down or off, makes the car almost as dead as a raw front engined FWD car. There are many drivers who go on about feel when they don't realize they're still pottering around in the dead non-dynamic part of its performance envelope due to stability control interference, or just plain driving it slowly in the pure grip range which doesn't really let true platform dynamics show up.
There is a forumer here (not Mike) who drives owns and drives both 997 and Cayman mid engine , and he prefers Cayman. Having experienced both types of cars on roads and track, I feel the same way. Currently trying to persuade a different friend to get Cayman S + select parts, instead of used GT3.
