I have been robbed in JB before, and I do not think it is a safe place for tourists.

But, is driving a "new/flashy bimmer" a cause for concerns?

Yes, it attracts eyeballs.

No, other marques kenna too. Unless one could show their crime statistics that luxury marques were victimised at the higher proportion based on total car-visitor population. Even then, one has to factor in cases that are not reported. In reality, it is the perception from hearsay, that luxury car owners fear of perceived wealth exposure, and other car owners fear the same !!! So, the fear will hit everyone driving into Malaysia, be it an S class or a RAV4. That's the state of how we think of social safety up north.

Then again, you could be mugged in London or Rome too.

The gist is to know how to protect and look out for signs of dangers, as purported by the rest of the forumers.

We used to drink at the stretch of pubs opposite Sanctum, same stretch as New York Hotel.

One Saturday night, after we drank, outside the pub, we were surrounded by a gang of 20+ youths. The pub pulled their shutter gate down and locked us out. The youths claimed that all five of us were creating trouble inside the pub, and they needed to "enforce the order of the area." Right there and then, after an exchange of no more than 3 sentences, we knew they just wanted money.

We actually negotiated and settled at M$500 in total (each M$100) to resolve the matter. A cheap price to settle a robbery, IMO. They did not frisk us, else we will lose our wallets and car keys.

Once their intention was clear, it was not scary, but intimidating. Anything that $$$ can settle, it would not be an issue. But a few of them were flashing knives. Damn blatant.

We did not go back to that stretch anymore. Not just about safety issues. But buay song with the way the pub shut us out.

Friend commented that there could be a collaboration. We will never know.

Some years back I was in KL with my wife. It was around 8+ PM, she went off to buy some stuff while I waited for her in the car. I needed some fresh air, so I got off the car. Just when I wanted to get back in, a scrawny middle-aged Chinese man (looked like a drug addict) stopped me. He demanded money and told me not to do anything foolish as he has a bottle of acid with him. At this point in time, I saw my wife walking towards us. I tried to warn her but she thought the guy was just probably asking for directions. Then she got in the car and instantly she knew what was going on. I told him I dont have much cash in the wallet (I usually just keep RM50 in the wallet and the rest in the pocket).

Out of the blue, my wife kept shouting dont give him money. She panicked, the guy panicked and I also panicked. I told him... take this RM50 and go. He took it without much resistance. Well, yes I was glad that it was just RM50 and no one was harmed. Till now, my wife still couldnt understand why she was so worked up that night.

Another incident was in New York City... we were just walking out of the Subway and we saw a black man walking towards us. We felt uneasy and quickened our pace... he caught up with us and told us he wanted to talk to us. We pretended we couldnt understand English... he got agitated and asked, you know what's in my bag? We obviously didnt answer him. He said, I have a gun. Damn it... we were stoned. Suddenly, I could speak English again. Told him not to harm us and we would give him anything he wants. So he took us to a corner and we gave him money and our watches. Again, we were rather relieved that we weren't harmed.

My worst experience is with my colleague in a striptease bar in London....we ordered some beers and waited for an hour but no striptease appear on the stage and we decided to pay the bill and leave. Guess what the bloody waiter demanded 200pounds for 4 bottle of beer and we start to arque with him and he summon a bloody big bouncer to our table...

Something strucked us that day..we got so agitated that we told him we are from China town (nearby) and dont fcuk with us...Some arquments later and with no agreement..we took the glass and whack the table and 4 letters words flew from our mouth like poetry in motion..That bloody conman got a shock and told us...Fcuk you two,,,u broke our glasses and i demand you to pay 20 pounds each and get out..Both of us happily paid and went away immediately and with such a relief.

May not be the wise thing to do but things just happend partly triggered by my gutsy friend that I cannot let down and I sense that since we are in a permanent bar in London things cannot go too wrong....Guess what as we were leaving the shitty joint, the fcuker waiter and bouncer move on to another single patron siting at the far-end. Too bad,,,I think he would probably have to pay a couple of hundred pounds for a beer..

So to me London sucks!....I have been to so many joints in US across so many states and always have pleasant experiences...Only issue is that they always insist to check my passport to see if I am above 18yrs when I told him I am 28 years (then)...Fcking Ah Mohs cannot tell asian age by the look...

omg some of you have really unpleasant experiences overseas...glad all well in the end...some bros are right in pointing out that we do live in a v protected environment and a great analogy that we are like domesticated animals being released into the 'wild'...hahaha! funny but dam true...my gf always commented that im too paranoid to travel w her...cos i wud always be worried bt exploring into less crowded areas...cos those lanes or alleys in europe or HK tend to more interesting finds? so im deemed uninteresting unadventurous etc etc....well my response to her is always the same...u think we are still in spore? these streets arent as safe. She seems to give me the impression that everywhere n everyone is angelic and that everywhere we go is so beautiful....WTH...too idealistic...I always tell her im ok to travel such places if we are in a bigger grp...Look, to guys it doesnt matter if u get mugged...jsut don get killed or hurt...to the girls...it just need to happened JUST ONCE...no need a few times...just ONCE... and you are scarred for life...of cos im referring to sexual assault...tts has always been my stand w my v v v buay kia si gf... =)

why dun you just rent a car to msia...solved all the problem rite....

u are on holiday, why give urself unnecessary stress over a car, rent a normal civic or altis.

if u going to kl/genting, fly there and rent a car from the airport....better rite, not so tiring.

if u going to kl/genting, fly there and rent a car from the airport....better rite, not so tiring.

yeah..though some ppl still prefer enjoy journey way up north in cars..
but doesnt matter what mode of transports one take whether public or private, it all drives down being street smart at the end of the day..

Funny you should say that.. I went up to Muar with Bernard on Sat night around 11ish PM to attend a funeral. Along the way I met a proton waja driving pretty aggressively just to stay in view of me.. sensing something is not right, i let them pass. Shortly after, they started to throw empty cans out of the car which i ran over a few.

As it was raining and driving behind a bunch of guys who appears to be having a beer fest in a car, I decided to slow down for 10-15 mins for both cars to get some space. Right about Pagoh area, I saw the same car parked along the NSH shoulder. Seeing my approach, they dashed right back into their car and moved off again.. as I was about 20-30km away from my exit, i just floored it.. hell i don't want to know what adventure awaits if they followed me into the small town.

To TS, for NSH, get another car to convoy with you. If alone, drive up during the day and stop over at popular rest stops suggested by others. You can also find a singapore car and tag along behind them. This way, it will appears that you guys are actually in a convoy. Alternatively, you can get iScoupe along, his trash talking will scare away any robbers

i concur. The problem is not with Malaysia. But with Singapore. The thing is that we are so used and complacent about the level of safety in Singapore that as time goes by your basic survival instincts disappear, making us easy targets. Everywhere else in the world, people do the smart thing, protect themselves, watch out for danger. It's like domesticated animals released into the wild. It's not the wild's fault that you kena makan, that's just how things are everywhere else. If you go holiday in Europe, America, Australia, etc, you should have the same level of viligence too. I'd readily say Singaporeans are the stupidest of the lot out there.
