My view is that if you intend to keep the car for up to 5 years, stay away from the SAAB. The SAAB drives like a dream in the first 2 years or so. Thereafter, your SAAB will probably be parked more frequently in the workshop than your garage/car park. Between the merc and the 520, I would think that the merc has a slightly better drive than the 520. In terms of reliability, I would say that the 520 would probably be more reliable. On balance, I will probably go for reliability. I had a car that broke down frequently. So I know first hand the frustrations of having to deal with the workshop over car problems. In any event, the 520 is also priced reasonably now.
