Re: No Smoke Without Fire ?
Following the stunning exposure that Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong may have an affair with a married woman who stood in the last election as a candidate of the Workers' Party, his neighbor had squealed on him on another affair.
According to Mr Yaw's neighbor who tipped off the state media via an email, he always noticed Mr Yaw visiting a flat belonging to a China migrant couple who have been renting the flat they live in.
Mr Yaw reportedly visited the woman secretly whenever her husband leaves the flat for work. When contacted by the state media, the woman who is working as a tutor, admitted that she had an affair with Mr Yaw.
“It was really very short (affair) that I even don't want to mention. I am not expecting pity because I do not deserve it.”
While some Singaporeans felt Mr Yaw's personal affairs has nothing to do with his performance as a MP, others wonder if he still has any moral authority to lead.
Former NMP Zulkifli Baharudin said in an interview with the state media:
“If a politician's private life is such that it erodes his moral authority, then it puts into question his effectiveness. having moral authority is a very important prerequisite of political leadership.”
With the WP leadership uniting behind Yaw Shin Leong, it appears that it is willing to weather the storm and hope that Singaporeans will soon forget about the scandal.
As this is the first time in the history of Singapore that a MP has been embroiled in such a scandal, it remains to be seen if it will have an impact on WP's reputation and electoral chances in the future.
