Noise on suspension

Re: Noise on suspension

Hi guys my colleague 2011 f10 523 also has this clonking noise from his suspension in the morning. After driving a while and warm up, the noise is gone. Seems like all f10 has this issue. Anyone manged to solve this problem with pml?

5 Sept 2013 - Left car overnight at PML
6 Sept 2013 - Test car together with SA. Why i left it overnight? Cause the noise is the most audible in the morning especially after humps.

Findings:
PML says that the noise was coming from front right (driver side). They will replace with a new spring strut. However, I still find that the sound was emitting from rear sector. Their reason was that sound travels. Anyway, appt fixed next week. Will see how it goes after the replacement parts. I accept zero tolerance for lubrication proposal as that has been done before. Only last 1 mth.
Will keep you guys update :)

cheers!

PML failed me again :errrrrrr:
Despite the replacement part at the front right spring strut, the noise was not eliminated!!
Haiz...dunno what to do now.
"Leaving my car again on Monday and they need to update car software...."
How to solve the suspension irritating noise.
I must admit that it's a small issue as after some drive and warm up, the noise will be gone.
But just "buay song" especially paid some much for the car!!
Need help.............

We are all looking for answer and solution as well :).....
PML the SA was kind enough to help me Trial & Error....but all clueless, including the gurus in the forum....perhaps the true gurus in this forum yet to appear :shakemyb:

Re: Noise on suspension

Had something similar on my merc.
Audible only when going over the hump at an angle very slowly.
Sounds like a knocking sound.

They gave me a replacement for the front struts.
But noise still there.
I took it a step further, upgraded to bilstein b12.
Nbcb. Noise still there. So I lived with it.

Something must have worn out coz when the car is new, there wasn't any sound.... Pls keep us informed. My colleague also thinking of leaving his car overnight but based on your experience, it looks like pml cannot solve the problem. Please keep us informed k. Thanks n good luck

Re: Noise on suspension

If car still under warrenty and PML does it for you for free, then bring to them (hahaha, probably need multiple trips). Else bring to R2D, he's one of gurus in finding annoying noise in cars :D

The main issue/problem we facing is that although the car is under warranty, we left it overnight umpteen times for them to test and they cannot address the issue!.....that's bad! They tried greasing, change front strut.....next don't know change what! We can't keep leaving the car in PML workshop for them to T&E.....wann trial and error until when...:(

Sounds like you have no choice but to pay to get it fix at another shop...

If PML can't solve it, why not MA?

If MA can't solve it, why not check outside specialist?

Think out of the box if AD is inefficient.

Actually I don't mind paying a "nominal fee" - say less than SGD 250 (taking into consideration it's not a major replacing fault) for such minor repairs by outside workshop if they can really fix this issue....frankly speaking, sending the car to PML and taking cab back (x2 times for collecting car), is already costing average SGD 35. today is my fourth visit to PML ( I just again left my car at PML for the suspension sound)... That excludes your other transport fees such as taking cab, trains etc to elsewhere.
Then whatever the final diagnose of the 'sound', send an official email to the GM or head of BMW that what they should have done rather than keep troubleshooting for miracle!!!

Leaving my car at PML today to address 2 issues:
1. Update car software issue (not a major issue and considered routine)
2. To address rear suspension sound especially in the morning (will just touch on this issue)

For issue 2, events as follows:
5 sept - left car overnight at PML
6 sept - tested car and SA say sound was from front right side. To replace with new spring strut. Appt fixed on 13 sept.
13 sept - replaced with new front right spring strut.
14 sept - rear sound squuezing was still audible. Recorded with iPhone memo voice recorder.
15 sept - rear sound squeezing was still audible. Recorded with iPhone memo voice recorder.
16 sept - morning sent in car for updating software and mainly to address the rear suspension sound. Let the SA and the technician hear the recorded noise. Could see ???from their silent expression. I proposed that the car parked overnight at nearby MSCP around deck 4. First thing in morning drive out from MSCP. Driving from PML to MSCP might not have that effects. Explained to me about safety as car outside PML. Accepted their reason. They now proposing to dismantle whole rear suspension and grease it... Leaving for another 2 to 3 days without car :(

Re: Noise on suspension

Get them to replace all 4 suspension.... Or replace with KWV2 coil over :)

Re: Noise on suspension

What kind of sound?

Thunk?
Squeal?
Scrub?

I never heard any noise from my F10. In fact it is the quietest car I've ever owned. I even changed to M-sports. No noise.

The only noise is a scrub coming down from MSCP too fast, which is caused by a loose lower piece of cover just in front of the front wheels (for aerodynamics). Most F10s I know have this piece loose after rubbing our SG MSCPs.

Do not know how to describe the sound to u. But 1 thing for sure, technician and SA also puzzled by the audible abnormal sound from the recorded voice memo (iPhone). You are the lucky guy that your F10 was 'normal' :) It is for sure not those extra kits (BTW mine do not have those sporty kits) or bumper rubbing against the floor area when up or down steep ramp. It clearly from the rear suspension especially in the morning and parking for a longer period of time ...

Re: Noise on suspension

I don't have any bodykits. Stock all the way except for M-sport suspension which lowers the car... well... 1cm. With or without m-sport, the front would come lose. Dun believe just look under your car. Just right in front of your front wheels there's two covers... most F10s I see have this piece dangling down after rubbing some humps.

With all above and replacement works, the sound is still there (happens in the morning drive and over hump and uneven roads). All bushing and suspension check, lubricate, replace ....whatsoever, you name it...Nothing can be done liao except change car! :wtf:

Re: Noise on suspension

Sorry to hear that.

Take the reason and change the suspension to aftermarket coilovers. Better handling and aesthetically pleasing too.

Re: Noise on suspension

Can u describe e sound.
We try to brainstorm 101 causes

Did they check the exhaust or e heat shield above it?

Sound are hard to describe....imagine this...a outdoor see-saw equipment at playground built 15 years ago without any lubrication maintenance. Initially, it gives off a "Yi-Hor" sound. But once you continuously swinging it, the sound goes off (like the car once after warm up, driving on road for few minutes). Of later, i realized that the sound is from bad to worse. Even driving on uneven road (especially JB), you could even hear the sound. It's driving me crazy...:whatthe:

Re: Noise on suspension

Does it make the sound when you go around the car and rock / press it ?

My KWs had spring sound which requires a major greasing to get rid of that sound. But it never sounded like the way you described with the see-saw.

Did they check the arbs and the endlinks ?
