Old folk home in JB

Singapore has about USD300B in foreign reserves. I do not understand why some of this money cannot go into social services. This government no longer serves the people.

A lot of budget is allocated to MFA to wine and dine with foreign "dignitaries"... sick but true. If you buy an island and set up a republic and become a president there, you will be treated like a king here.

budget is allocated to each Ministry on an annual basis and i am sure it does not come from the reserves.

but you have to stand by your allegations if the Ministry spots this post that you have just written. Good luck.

I did not mention about reserves, I only mentioned about the obscene budget. I heard it first hand from a high ranking MFA officer a long time ago. If my memory does not fail me, it should be you-know-who in the news recently.

Of course, I wish the powers up there would read it and do the right thing one day. I only vow to protect the truth. At the end of the day, it is about getting the priorities right as a small nation.

Re: Old folk home in JB

If a person wants to impress his friends and entertain them to improve his standing in the circle, he should first make sure that his family members are well fed and their needs are well taken care of before looking after his "face". Otherwise, when the family members are seen begging in front of the same friends he entertained, he will know that his priorities and life are damn screwed. No name mentioned. Any coincidence in this make belief story is purely coincidental. But if it hits your conscience, please repent :p

I think they can't touch past reserves unless approved by President.

My thoughts are as follows:

1. Caring for parents in our own homes remain the primary option. There's no substitute

2. Age restricted communities are not developed in SEA, and should be. Australia, US, UK have developed and run these successfully for the aged of different care needs. Options range from active elders to geriatric care.

3. Traditional old folks home in Malaysia are not necessarily inferior to Singapore offerings. Good private health care are emerging in MY and TH, and are significantly cheaper than Singapore -- especially for elective procedures. Same and can will happen in Malaysia

4. Batam may make a better candidate than JB as alternative elder care destination - no traffic jams, lower crime rate.

As for me -- I have a group of close friends from church who are either single or childless. One idea we are toying with is to pull our resources to build our own bungalow for retirement. We can then build and get our own care facilities as we age. When the last of us go, we will donate the place to our church.

That is a good idea and a noble cause.. But definitely home first. Send oversease is last resort..

Re: Old folk home in JB

Never regretted caring for my mother in her last days. Wasn't easy, wife and I were on 12 hour shifts basically, especially in mom's last few weeks, because of the incessant pain. Those final few weeks she had left with us felt like years because it was just so tiring to care for her 24/7, but after she passed away, wife and I would have given everything just to have one more week - a few days even - with mom again.

Honestly, I know I may have said this a few times before but I'll say it again - as a child, no matter how wronged you feel you've been done by your parents, it's a privilege to be able to care for them before they pass on. It's cathartic for your own soul, and if you have children of your own, it sets a good example because you'll walk that exact same path years down the road, and you'd wish your kids have learnt from a good example you set years ago. If nothing else, remember Karma can come and bite you on your ass when you least expect it...
