Hi guys. Been away for a while but now grounded 'cos of global H1N1 flu situation.
Went to test drive the car today 'cos was at PML looking for a nail which pieced my tires :-(
Not that crowded as ppl say leh.
Test drove black Z4 TT. Went from Alexandra to highway to south buona vista and back. My opinions are in comparison to previous Z4 2.5 which I owned and my current 335ciC.
Car looks more svelte compared to old Z4 but perhaps not too aggressive. Nevertheless, it did turn heads on the road prob 'cos it's new. On sitting in the car, controls similar to previous Z4 including the thin and light steering wheel (I prefer the 335's steering wheel - thicker and more meaty steering). No parking brake to get in the way so that's good. Trim and fit and finish has improved over 1st gen Z4 but SHOCKING is no iDRIVE like the car at the launch. At $248k and NO iDRIVE??!! just a hole? :furious:
Driving position is otherwise good and slightly more spacious than 1st gen z4 but less so than 335.
Driving - expected the TT to give an edge of the pants drive but honestly not much quicker or drama compared to my 335. Car is much more grown up and stable c.f. 1st gen z4. In fact the car is heavier and drives smoother but I honestly prefered 1st gen z4 drive - more at the edge, which is what I think a roadster should drive. Steering is light (I perfer 335's) but accurate and easy to manipulate. But car is heavier and although more stable, is less manuverable c.f. 1st gen z4.
2 suspension settings - Normal and Sport. There is a sport+ which is apparently same as sport but with the traction control off. Normal suspension is quite confortable and car rides over bumps relatively well c.f. 1st gen Z4. IMHO 335conv stock still more compliant. Sport firms up the ride to approx 1st gen Z4 on sport suspension and handes well but not as much feedback as 1st gen z4. However, overall the sound insulation is much much better incl. less wind noise so it gives perception that it is smoother drive.
Twin clutch gearbox is a HOOT - quick gear changes and never missed a beat. It even tries to blip the downchanges but the exhaust note is a letdown. IMHO the tuning for the exhaust could have been a little more aggresive.
Roof operation is easy but the mechanism in the trunk that allows increased boot space (dunno what that's called) is very flimsy and out of place in a 250k car. Driving with roof down is great but less wind buffeting c.f. 1st gen Z4. However, the experience is more grown up and less exciting. The windshield is less intrusive c.f. 1st gen z4 in that there is more space between face and edge of windshield so adds to the more spacious feeling.
At the end, felt that z4 has grown up and is HORRORS more SLK like now. I would have preferred soft roof, lighter, and more direct driving feedback. Saw a few ladies test driving and was told that quite a few ladies are considering it compared to almost none for 1st gen Z4 - no offence to the ladies. Even my wife said that feels more like SLK.
IMHO it seems that BMW is trying to meet all demands and has come up with something that perhaps is too much of a compromise. If I needed the grown up feel, then I would get 335conv - which I did and will not be swayed by the Z4. Similar drive, but more space and comfort. If I wanted the true roadster feel at $250k I would just get a boxster... the on paper power difference does not translate into any feel on the road. Hope the Z4M will change this with a carbon fibre roof, additional weight loss, and that little bit more drama.
