Plants will soil not allowed through customs

I just returned to Singapore from Cameron Highlands. At the customs, my soil/fertilizer and flower pots were confiscated. They allowed me to take the plants without soil. So, I had to go to a trash bin and remove all the soil in the plants.

There is also a limit to number of plants we can bring - five.

I wasn't aware of this, so, I thought it might be useful to post it here.

Thanks bro Bandu, for the heads up. Is that like 5 plants per person, or 5 plants in total? I'm asking because we were thinking of getting potted plants (which I'll now remove the soil) from M'sia as well.

Any restriction on the type of plants? Papaya, durian, mango, watermelon? Do they allow roots? Must they be alive?

Since we are in the topic of customs restriction, i will share some info as well. When i was in paris, i bought lots of cheese, including blue cheese which goes well with wines.. Whole crate was confiscated by customs, i argued cheese is not liquid, but they said when it melts it will be and i said its will be at most soft, blah blah blah.. I think the officers will happily consume and i curse them lau sai and kkj impotent aft eating those cheeses.. I da man..

Good question, I didn't specifically ask whether it is a per-person restriction or not. Since I had three people in the car, and they said only five plants will be allowed, I assume it is not an "official limit" but something they would let go of - like a "grace limit".

One of my plants didn't recover after re-potting it. I assume those small roots were broken when I removed the soil. So, if you are bringing plants without soil, you might want to check what kind of plants would survive after re-potting.

They asked me to sign on some book, and I was bit concerned because in a country like Singapore where everything is connected, having an offense recorded is not healthy. They said, it is just to acknowledge that customs took my stuff. So, I signed.

Thanks bro Bandu. Wife was very keen to 'import' some red hot chili padi plants in from Malaysia - we have a bit of a cat problem at home, and hearsay, cats will be repelled by the pungent odour of the plants. Looks like we'll have to DIY & plant it ourselves then. Either that, or I set cat traps...
