SINGAPORE - Odd-job worker Ng Cheng Kiat, whose MRT brawl with another man was caught on video, was fined $2,500 on Wednesday.
The 50-year-old pleaded guilty to one charge of affray for grabbing and punching contractor Teeng Kok Yong, 40, in the face on the train last month while they were travelling between Khatib and Yio Chu Kang stations.
According to court documents, the fight broke out sometime around 11.50pm on Jan 11 after Ng perceived Teeng to be gesturing inappropriately to Ng's girlfriend.
Teeng had a metal stud in his tongue and was "playing with it by moving his tongue around", an action that Ng assumed was directed at his girlfriend in a perverted manner.
Ng grabbed Teeng by the shoulder, and proceeded to punch him twice in the face, with Teeng also kicking and punching back.
The two ended up scuffling on the ground for about a minute before a fellow passenger separated them.
They were subsequently escorted out of the train by MRT staff at Yio Chu Kang station.
The video of their exchange of blows, punctuated with Hokkien expletives, received several thousand views on YouTube, and also went viral on Facebook.
Both were arrested on Jan 20 and charged with affray, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $5,000. Teeng is expected in court next month.
Ng, who is married with three children and was unrepresented on Wednesday, reiterated in court that Teeng's actions had been obscene.
He also sought leniency, saying that his wife had recently gone for an operation and is on medical leave.
