FYI just in case you miss this thread:

318i made in Germany
320i made in South Africa

Probably can do a re-mapped to match the power of 320i

yes 318i and 320i indeed shared the same engine but the 318i is actually 143hp and 190nm..... vs 320i: 150hp and 200nm (156hp and 20 0nm)

some items that don't come along with the 318i are: XL (high beam and low beam), arm rest front sliding, automatic air-conditioning, rear passenger air-con vent, different leather, headlight washer system, interiror rear-view mirrors with automatic anti-dazzle function...

you are right you pay for what you get......so this are all the items that 318i owner will not be getting............unless they go for the 320i......so for 20k it should be worth it to have all those goodies/extras for the 320i.......

Probbaly you can say 320i is the highline version vs the normal 320i (which is 318i)

FYI:
The 323 and 325 shares the same engine and same intake manifold, however the 325 runs at much higher compression ratio. I supposed this is possible through different engine mapping by giving more intake and exhaust valve overlap, thereby reducing the engine compression.

323 & 325 has different DISA (differential intake system). Check out REALOEM. DISA for N52B25 is supposed to be 3 stage. Mayb 323 has only 2 stage.

It is the same for 318 & 320.

Do you think there is a difference in the country of make? Does Germany made means better fit and finish against S.Africa? If not wrong, only 335i and the higher series are made in germany. Sounds like bonus that basic 318i is made in germany.
What color is your new ride? Believe you must be really excited...

my E89 is Black with red interior.........(ok ok.......waiting for delivery)

If not wrong, only 335i and the higher series are made in germany. Sounds like bonus that basic 318i is made in germany.

The new 335i I bought from PML this year was assembled in Dec 2008 in South Africa.

So far so good except driver door a bit hard to close.

Booked 318i a week ago and thinking of changing to 320i. Does PML allow it and in terms of discount, will ther be more for 320i than 318i. or the same?

Bro,

It depends when you confirmed your 318i. Did your 318 factor in the price increase of 5k? If it did, negotiation may be easier. But nevertheless, dont expect the best deal for your 320 becos PML has no obligation to give you more discount than you are entitled as it has your 12k deposit in their bag! :furious:

I'm not an expert in car engine but this explanation sounds logical, assuming 318 has only 2 stages and 320 has 3 stages, then it would be impossible for 318 to remap to 156 bhp.

Even wif 320 DISA, i don't think it is that easy to re-map to 156bhp. This is because ECU has to built in the activation point for all 3 stage.

Velocity basically cheats the ECU to boost the pick up, but no ponies are added. But the rest definetely does. Plus can change airfilter and air scoup too.

Was having this question in my mind and see if any bros can help to answer.

Many bros commented that 318 is in fact the same engine as 320 (I agree with this), just that it is detuned to achieve 136 ponies instead of its original 156 ponies and the buyer can then increase the ponies in an aftermarket by remapping etc. Why would BMW AG want to deliberately depress its ponies if it is supposed to achieve higher?

based on your theory,
BMW could separate 323/325 and 523/525 by its equipment and quality (ie: leather quality, memory sets, xenon lights, electronics, idrive,with & without bodykit, etc) -> it is simple, isn't it ?

so, why choose the route to detune the engine ? it is quite simple, you have to pay more for more power

Its all marketing stretegy to rival the Benz..... But I think they didn't do an excellent job.... as the new C160 has an edge over the 318 for slightly better equipments. But for the same $$, I still go for the Bimmer.
