Police spec. E36s from 2003

Morning guys, some of you may or may not already know what I'm talking about; nevertheless, read on!

I bought my E46 facelift coupe from PML in December 2003, when it was just launched (and so was the M3 CSL). For my consideration also, the sales ex offered an alternative - there were 5 white E36 320i sedans spec'ed by the Traffic Police for use as highway patrol cars, but which they eventually rejected. These cars had the 5spd manual, M body kit I think, if my memory serves me correctly.

Now has anyone heard or obtained one of these? They were wicked, and I'm trying to track one down. :)

i know of one, but its not for sale, the force keeps it for showcase. 5 speed manual, still has the patrol colors on it. No bodykit thou.

Not sure if this is the one you are talking about.

///M Engine=Myth...

Re: Police spec. E36s from 2003

Not sure if these were the same cars but there were 2 of them at Force Transport Branch near 2nd Ave back in 2001, white E36 sedan with an orange stripe down the side... I distinctly remember it had no M-bodykit, very basic spec... one of them was fairly beat up.. not sure what became of them... we were on an FTB conversion course for NSI's so they let us drive the beat-up one a little, the instructor was a bit of a show-off.... of course at that age none of us had driven any proper RWD cars so it was a novel experience

This is the car that made me want to get the E36 :yummie: goodness that was nearly 8 years ago.. how time flies :(

Re: Police spec. E36s from 2003

even the German policia dun have ///M Engines...juz the speed limiter removed...good enough...

Bodykit is veeeeery unlikely for Q-plated cars.

PML was hawking those E36s in 2003? They must have been sitting around for a long time - BMW stopped making them in 1999.

Re: Police spec. E36s from 2003

Hello, thanks for your replies.

Yes I think PML was holding on to them for a long time because firstly they were reject cars, secondly because of the basic spec, like what you guys suggested. The kit may have been fitted by PML - on this point I have no idea though I don't doubt that Q plated cars probably wouldn't have them. But remember, these never took delivery. No police stripe or force colours either, just white.

And that's exactly why I'm trying to trace it down. Basic spec + Manual gearbox...I see a track car in the making.

Re: Police spec. E36s from 2003

well dont know of any left. but like i said, there is one sitting at "classified location" Its a e36 320manual. No bodykit. Just white sedan with orange stripes, and that big light on top.

If you want a 320manual, there are some in the market, even in our forum.

Re: Police spec. E36s from 2003

If you're after an E36 6-cyl manual, it's better to get an auto and convert it... most of the manual cars have been abused.. the automatic 320i's are in better shape in terms of chassis, the auto trans is kinder on the rear subframe mounts and the car in general... the 2 manual examples I saw had minor rear subframe damage simply due to driveline shunt from torque reversals from careless manual driving.. this sort of thing is very difficult to fix

If you have an auto pre-94 E36.. it is incredibly simple to convert it to manual.. you don't even need a new DME (ECU), just buy the manual trans, driveshaft, the clutch & brake pedals (the pedal post is the same for auto/manual).. you just need to connect 2 wires, one for the reverse light and one for the neutral safety switch.. it's not half as complicated as people (esp workshops) make it out to be, the E46 is a whole different story of course, mostly due to the integrated electronics

One day I'll post a DIY write-up on the E36 manual conversion.. you'll be shocked at how straightforward it is.. these cars were designed as manual and retrofitted to auto so all you need to do is un-do the retrofit :)
