‘Unless we have more babies, we need to accept immigrants’

Singapore’s downward trend of population growth is damaging to its economy, said former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew on Friday.

Speaking at a Tanjong Pagar group representation constituency Chinese New Year dinner, Lee said that given our almost record-low birth rate of 1.2 from last year, Singapore will need to depend on immigrants to “make up our numbers”, reported The Straits Times (ST).

He also shared the breakdown — 1.08 for Chinese, 1.09 for Indians and 1.64 for Malays — with 2.1 as the benchmark replacement rate, reported TODAY.

“In other words the population of Chinese Singaporeans in the next generation, 18 to 20 years, will half,” he was quoted by the paper as saying as well.

Comparing the number of babies born in Singapore when he was prime minister in 1959 (more than 62,000) and the number of babies born in 2011 (about 36,000), Lee commented that the task of increasing the nation’s population is its “biggest challenge”.

He added that having babies may be a personal matter, but has “considerable consequences” for Singapore, reported ST.

He noted how trends of women being more highly educated and the movement toward greater gender equality at the workplace have contributed to the phenomenon of a declining birth rate, adding that currently, some 44.2 per cent of men and 31 per cent of women between the ages of 30 and 34 are still single.

The broadsheet also reported that Lee compared Singapore’s economy to that of Japan’s, saying that their resistance to receiving immigrants has resulted in stagnation in its economy.

“The Japanese have large reserves and can withstand slow growth for a long time,” he was quoted as saying, adding that the choice to take a hostile stance to immigrants is something that Singapore “cannot afford to make”.

“Like it or not, unless we have more babies, we need to accept immigrants,” he added.

Re: PRC SAF Officer.

If a Malaysian can become a minister, why not a Chinese army officer?

Re: PRC SAF Officer.

Ex chief justice also from Malaysia, as was ex CEO of SMRT, Hyflux chairwoman and that kpf (kiam pak face) Singapore table tennis MP Lee Bee Wah... Malaysia actually has a lot of very talented Chinese that, thanks to the racist myopic policies, end up overseas and benefitting their new homelands.

Their loss, our gain. At least, IMHO, Malaysian Chinese are not so cut throat and egocentric and rude or belligerent as the PRCs.

Re: PRC SAF Officer.

At least he is willing to serve NS, excel in BMT and swallow the another 9 months of hardship. I respect him for that. Also, look at the badges on his chest. They are all hard earned.

What about those who want citizenship but not willing to serve NS?

Re: PRC SAF Officer.

What's the fuss about? His family probably put it on wrong at the commisioning parade( background looks like it). This is just xenophobic bs and I would like to think Singaporeans/typical netizen can rise above this but I guess I'm an optimist.

The fuss is about the fact that the last time our defence relied upon the leadership of people who were here on the island only for economic reasons, it was renamed Syonanto.

The fuss is that arising from that lesson in history, generations of Singaporean soldiers and officers were indoctrinated in the belief of self-reliance; in fact, our National Service policy was built upon this belief. Now it seems that this point has either been forgotten or perverted by the very same proponents of NS in the 60s and the reversed epaulettes in the picture are just emblematic of a policy gone wrong. Like most men, I gave up two and a half years of my life because I subscribe to this belief. Chipped teeth, a broken collarbone and an infantry sword of merit later, all I ask for is consistency in its application to defence policy.

I also dispute that this is xenophobia, which implies that there is unreasonable fear or hatred. Is there? Anecdotes abound in both internet and mainstream media that seem to suggest that this isn't simply an irrational knee-jerk. Was the ground swell of public opinion during the last general election simply a chance gathering of tens of thousands of unreasonable people? Was that mass hysteria that we saw or is there, as I am suggesting, a reasonable basis behind this fear of abdicating leadership responsibility in our military?

We all have our own believes, to each his own. peace out.
