Is this for real?? Can owner buy the road in front of their house?

Who's VW Jetta ah ??

STOMPer K found his car wheel-clamped by a private property owner who demanded $500 as the removal fee.

The STOMPer had parked for 15 minutes at a double-yellow line in front of a terrace house at Jalan Mas Puteh while he collected food from a nearby restaurant.

Wrote STOMPer K:

"This happened at Jalan Mas Puteh at about 7.45pm on August 3.

"I parked my car in front of this terrace house as I went to collect my food from one restaurant that I had made a phone order from.

"As it was a busy Saturday, my food took longer then usual.

"About 15 minutes later, I walked back to my car and I noticed it had been wheel-clamped.

"When I tried to find out who wheel-clamped it, one old man came out and demanded $500. I was dumbfounded.

"Then he pointed to a signboard stating, 'Private property. Wheel clamp removal fee $500.'

"Then I told him I came here to collect my food and I didn't know it's a private road as it did have normal road markings (double-yellow lines).

"He still demanded I pay him $500.

"I called the police in, and I was shocked when the police also told me that they had indeed bought that portion of the road last year.

"I was not the only car that had been wheel-clamped before. "Apparently, about 20 cars before me have been wheel-clamped and the police are unable to assist.

"I demanded a receipt, but i was instead given this pathetic letter.

"So dear STOMPers, beware where you park."

Are the owners allowed to clamp cars themselves? Is it legal at all?

Lucky this is taking place in SG...you know what I mean..:shhhh:

Re: Private property owner wheel-clamps car and demands $500 from driver

If it's his property, how is it any different from security guards in condos and shopping centers clamping wheels? It's really the car that is trespassing in the first place. Then clamp doesn't damage the car in any way.

Re: Private property owner wheel-clamps car and demands $500 from driver

this sounds very grey...
police informed that the land is owned by that old man, therefore they cant do anything to the clamped car....
lets take for example,
if I were to enter the man's house to use the toilet (with permission),
after using, he wanted to charged me $100 for the use,
i dispute the charges and the man show me a sign somewhere that says its $100 for toilet usage.
i refuse to pay, he refuse to open the door to let me go,
i call police, police come say its his house, and they can do nothing and your not the first person to kana carrot by the man.
can ah?!

I will put a sign: cars parked here will be clamped, and no assistance would be provided to remove the wheel clamps.

shopping center and condo is different, they are fenced up and clearly demarcated as private property.
this road is not fenced up, only have a sign that says its private property. how legit is it? if the land is really owned by that guy, can charge parking fees, not a bad deal ya?

Re: Private property owner wheel-clamps car and demands $500 from driver

With the warning signages , if driver still insists on parking ... Then the risk is yours .

Same as handicapped lot with all the warning signages. You parked , you get fine.

Re: Private property owner wheel-clamps car and demands $500 from driver

Find a better place to park...nothing will happen if we parked properly...
