My guts are that the temperature delta thingy would apply more in say tropical climate or places where temperature difference below ground level is lightly to be more significant. In our equatorial climate, the earth beneath may not cool that much overnight.
In the case of water, there is no significant changes to its volume with regards to temperature changes within the ambient range. However, when you chilled it pass 4 celcius, it actually expand, hence ice float and heating is necessary in winter climate to prevent pipe from bursting.
Still is good food for thoughts, I travel around 100 km each day to and from work and may as well just try out this theory. Guess there's nothing to loose.
