HI Guys,

Intending to have one fixed, preferably mounted right above centre air con vent.

Seeking advice from fellow forumers here who have done this before and recommendations of reliable tried and tested brands. Please include damage and place of installation as well.

Pics of it in your car will be good too.

Re: Recommendation for GPS / Navigator

to second centurion's recommendation..

200W is one good navigator. small, fuss free.

why not look here http://www.bmw-sg.com/forums/bazaar-bmw-parts-accessories/26704-wts-garmin-200w.html

a fellow forumer is selling his. i bought mine from the same shop he bought his and have used it in sg and europe. i belive it comes with paid jerome malsing map and us maps
and you can just purchase additional sd cards with maps for other countries... e.g. europe, australia

comes with pedestrian and cycling mode too.. so you can use it to geocache too~ :D

Re: Recommendation for GPS / Navigator

If it is primarily for car use...

I will recommend the Nuvi 650.660 series which are widescreen...

Have bought a few of the 200,200W,250W,650,660 series for friends and myself,

The lock on time of the 200 series can be very slow and unpredictable compared to the 600 series despite using the same Sirf III chipset.
Also the software of the 600 series is much better than the 200...example...200 Series is POI search only...
even the mounting on the 600 series is better...

have a look here... GPSmagazine - The Latest GPS Reviews, News, & Buyers Guides

I am looking at upgrading mine 250W to something with a bluetooth capabiility as well and widescreen still...

but well if budget is a concern...the Garmin Nuvi 200 series is a good investment still.

Re: Recommendation for GPS / Navigator

the 200 series is now address search also because the malsingmaps guys successfullly hacked into the system further.

about S$300+? from Perfect Watch 1st floor Sim Lim Square.

Re: Recommendation for GPS / Navigator

a forummer got her Garmin 660 for $720 with 'local warranty'

i get it for about $400-500...

Re: Recommendation for GPS / Navigator

Using the 200W, bought from a PI guy. Easy to use.. except virtual keyboard is not qwerty , later models have qwerty layout i believe....

anyway r u guys worried that yr gos might be stolen while in the car? how many of u here leave it on yr dash board?

I am thinking of getting someone to custom a 2 din addontop of the centre console and mount the 200w inside it... AKA i drive style... anyone know of any shops who do custom work like this?

Actually someone did a QWERTY keyboard layout on MalSing forum. Do a search there. It's a file you download and install. It'll replace your onscreen keyboard.

Re: Recommendation for GPS / Navigator

I got the 205W from amazon for < $400.

Is questionable sometimes shops say they have "paid Jerome" maps, whether they really paid anything to for it, cos the "ahem" version of the malsing map (contributor's version) can be found.

Re: Recommendation for GPS / Navigator

I'd go for Garmin anytime. I have been a Garmin user for quite a while now. If you want a cheap and good version, get the Garmin Nuvi 260 or 260W.

Amazon.com: Garmin nüvi 260 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator: Electronics

The 260 series rocks compared to the 200 or 200w version because it comes with text to speech function which means that instead of just saying "Turn left 200m", it'll actually say " In 200m, turn left on Geylang Road"

IMHO, its absolutely worth getting this function because this way you can keep your eyes on the road and look out for the road sign, instead of having to keep peering into your GPS to read the exact road name you have to turn into.

Maps wise, there is the free Singapore malsing maps that you can get, the jerome wee (gota pay ) maps, and also the official Garmin Singapore Maps (gota pay too ). All of them have their pro/cons.

As for where to get them, Amazon is probably the cheapest or if you can buy it over from USA, that'll be the best. The units sold by the official/PIs in Singapore will cost you anywhere from $100 to a couple hundred more for the higher end versions.

One good thing about Garmin units is that if you travel overseas, they've got pretty good map coverage if you can get your hands on their overseas maps.

As for mounting the unit, I suggest that you get your unit first, and then see how you like the suction mount that comes with it. Mine falls off once in a while so now I just make sure re-suck it on regularly. I've also just ordered the beanbag thingy from Amazon ( US$28 vs S$80 from Perfect Watch, Sim Lim ) to mount my GPS.

Hope this helps dude.

Re: Recommendation for GPS / Navigator

In the past, i actually came across a GPS adapter kit, that you could install in your car, and have the GPS appear on the inbuilt display. (idrive). But it is applicable only for cars that do not come factory built with GPS (smaller screen).

Am actually going to take a trip with the family across the border this upcoming weekend, and i was hoping to install this system. However i cant find it online anymore. Its a Singapore distributor, and they also sell GPS navigation systems itself as well, or the installation of the kit i mentioned above? Anyone heard of this? It can also be installed in those Lexus models with screens, cause Borneo does not have the GPS maps for Singapore, so they remove the system from the displays.

If you guys are aware of this system, i would greatly appreciate any information!

P.S: dont mean to change the direction of the post, but i think it applies to navigation systems as well! especially those that have 5 series that come without the inbuilt GPS systems. :)

Re: Recommendation for GPS / Navigator

I was passing by this shop just behind LaSalle on Short Street. Curious with what they were offering, I walked in.

Upon hearing that my 523 LCI model does not come with navigation over the iDrive screen, the shopkeeper said he could get it done at slightly over 1K.

You may give it a try. Lousy attitude though, warn you first ah.
