removing cat converter

i wanted to remove the cat converter on my exhaust...but the workshop guy told me that the service light might come on if i took it off... is it true?

and what will changing my exhaust downpipe to stainless steel do?

Re: removing cat converter

What is your ride? That will depend on whether you have O2 sensors after the cat or not.

Stainless steel saves weight. It is a better insulator than the stock material so it keeps the exhaust hotter and velocity higher. It will also make a raspier sound at high rpm.

Re: removing cat converter

changing the exhaust downpipe will also mean your pre-cats will be removed too.

removing both precats and your main cats will mean your car will be much louder, and your exhaust much smellier, but if coupled with a freer flow intake, can make your car much more responsive. but you can give up any hopes of passing any inspections.

whether or not error light will come out depends on if there are any lambda sensors after the part you have operated.

Re: removing cat converter

i think i am going to remove my cat... my ride is an E60... what if the engine check lights up? will it be bad?

Re: removing cat converter

just remove the whole exhaust hahaha all you are doing is slowly removing parts from your exhausts hahaha

Re: removing cat converter

u can remove ur cats on the E60..no problem. in fact..change ur headers and exhaust too. ur throttle respond will be instantaneous. insulation in the E60 is good as well..but there will still be a notable difference in sound. expect some resonance...and irritated neighbours and their dogs.

on another note..wanna buy stoptech brake steel hoses? pm me if u want.

wont the engine check light come on? what do u mean by change the headers?

Re: removing cat converter

your sensors on the e60 is pre cat....no lights. headers also known as manifolds...change them if u want more power....afterall u r going the illegal way when u remove cats....

ok so i guess its okay to remove the cat converter and i presume the engine check light wont come out right?

where can i change the headers? how much will it cost?

Re: removing cat converter

pls call juzz for cars...the number is on the workshop column up there..look for amos...he will tell u.

Re: removing cat converter

will removing the cat also remove "backpressure" which may result in poorer low end torque ?

Re: removing cat converter

Does the E60 have 2 cats or just one? If the first one is with the header, where is the second one located?

Re: removing cat converter

2 cats....2nd one is between headers n muffler. removing cats...is a serious decision. it will make ur car very loud. but ur petrol consumption will go down at least 1.5l/100km. throttle response is almost instantaneous though. at 1700rpm..u will hear the raspy sound.

If I remove the 2nd cat, would it be able to pass emission test?

Re: removing cat converter

Removing the post cats will be louder by abt 20-30% more. I think its as good as another mod on the rear muffler.

Re: removing cat converter

no...u will fail LTA even if u touch 1 cat. anyway if u remove dun throw away..they are 1500 each. contains platinum.

Re: removing cat converter

ya better not throw away the cat very expensive ... inspection sure fail ..
