Replica or original rims?

Re: Replica or original rims?

oem or replicas, they all look the same, probably good reps maybe even feel the same! ... BUT...

just to share a personal experience: several years back wifey (with both my toddlers in the car, belted up) was 'banged' at highway speed to the kerb by a mini truck going out of control (obviously quite bad damage to body panels) but more important is: wheel very badly kerbed and mildly deformed, but no cracks, and tires stuck firmly on without losing pressure, so wife could even drive the car home after the accident. It was a BBS RK II...

looking at some of the damaged cars with broken/cracked rims at sin ming and sometimes on the road, i was so glad that the few thousand more spent on the RKIIs paid off more than i could imagine.

i can't imagine if the rims cracked/broke in that accident, and the whole car went out of control with my whole family in it. it's worth every cent.

no nid to track. just nid to be on the road to justify a good set of rims.

Agree with safety is important. In my case, I will hunt around for second hand original rims. In the meantime, I have to continue using stock ugly rims. Sian.

Btw, I saw some bros dekit their rims (mods) to use back stock ones and selling their new knn filters etc. Why?

Re: Replica or original rims?

you also don't know the quality and condition of the 2nd rim

I have a friend that like to track his car and got into accident twice, once in the track and the other on Singapore road. On both cases, he was using BBS CH 19" and they damaged rim actually 'tore' apart. This rims are from BBS original BUT was so surprise to see that the rim didnt dent BUT 'tear away" like a cardboard. The accident is NOT that bad either, just kerb.

I believed it is solely dependent on the material used.

Just to share my view.

:)

Re: Replica or original rims?

BBS CH is form-flow cast, not forged.

Re: Replica or original rims?

cheap/budget vs expensive rim ... just goes with your heart and budget
OT: just like i don't understand why use spacer 10mm-15mm. isn't that as worry as using reps on high speed in NSH ?

i think the question is the rim tore apart then accident
or accident then rim tore apart?

Woah.....we need CSI forensics...

Re: Replica or original rims?

Dudes, tell me why would anyone sell away their rep/original rims and then changed back to stock rims?

Re: Replica or original rims?

I can think of many reasons. But I guess that one of the most common reasons is owner is dekitting as he plans to sell the car.

Re: Replica or original rims?

i tot bmw rides have this automated tyre sensor for RFT. so changing rims wldnt compromise this feature?

Agreed dude.

The way the material tore apart also can tell the built quality, process used and strength of the rim. Usually the rim will dent rather than 'tore apart'. :)

Re: Replica or original rims?

I tried using replicas but can really feel the weight.....so I swop it for the real OZs...HUGE difference!!!

eh? whats the difference?

Re: Replica or original rims?

My ride felt more sluggish during acceleration...especially from stop and when doing quick lane changes. Rolling mass is something like 8 times the actual mass. So even if it's 1kg heavier on the weighing scale it is actually 8kg difference when it's rolling...

Re: Replica or original rims?

BTW if having TUV rims and got into accident, can claim $ for the rim? Or can we even insure the amount covering the rim?
