HI Bro,

I'm currently driving E90 318I don know is LCI or........but year 2010 Oct car. Think of changing rim size, considering 18 or 19" wheel, Any one here able to advice size of rim which more suitable, tires width and offset for flush fenders?

Thank you

Cheers

Re: Request advice for rim change

Bro, my cust care told me 17" is the max considering fuel efficiency. Sometimes when you move to 18 or 19, it looks nice but might have negative effect on performance.

sad to say, your cust care is talking c*ck. i dun find any diff changing from 17-19" w.r.t. fuel efficiency - ride comfort, yes.

i refer you to this thread to find your answers, lots of good discussion here:

see the post by wt_know.

i am running on common wheels front and back, with spacers behind.

anyway, just go to a good tyre shop and they would be able to advise you accordingly. choose the rims and tyres you want, and walah, there you have it.

have fun.

Re: Request advice for rim change

Lots of confusion concerning poorer efficiency from changing wheels:

(1) Rolling diameter - one need to work out the differences in rolling diameters before concluding changing larger wheels will lead to larger rolling diameter. The differences are smaller than you perceive. The formula is wheel diameter in inches (times 25.4 to convert to mm) + 2 times (aspect ratio % times tyre width). For example, stock wheels style 189 on real tyre, the total diameter is (18 times 25.4) + 2 times (35 times 255) = 635.7 mm. If you change the wheels to 19", and 265 tyres, the estimated rolling diameter will be 641.6 mm, difference of 6 mm, not a one-for-one increase in wheel diameter.

(2) Combined weight of wheel and tyre - larger wheel might be lighter than smaller wheel, given the material used. Go to any tyre shop, weigh a stock BMW wheel vs an aftermarket brand such as Volks, 2 inches bigger. Bigger diameter does not mean heavier wheels. On the tyres, the stock RFT is very heavy compared to aftermarket tyres. So combining both weight savings, you could well be running better fuel economy from larger (but lighter) wheels.

Discussed here: http://www.bmw-sg.com/forums/suspension-brake-tyres-rims-section/30391-weight-tyres-concern-you.html

(3) Distribution of weight on the wheels+tyre - visualise this: stock wheel plus heavier RFT, versus larger but light wheel and light tyre. Which one consumes more energy to spin? Still so sure that the larger wheel necessarily consumes more energy? This is the same with wheels. 2 wheels might weigh the same, but the 2-piece wheel with a steel barrel is actually harder to spin than a monoblock wheel with lighter barrel.
