Requesting some advice for 2014 F30 316i Problems

Dear all,

I bought a 2nd hand 316i last year Dec, it was manufactured in Sep 2014. Everything was all smooth until recently.

1st Problem
During cold start at 6:30am, I let the RPM dropped till below 1000, then release hand brake, then put the gear to 'D', I can feel the gears being engaged by sensing a slight 'drop' at the rear. As soon as i release my leg off the brake, a "TOK" sound can be heard and the car was somehow thrown to the front instead of moving slowly. This morning (19-June) it got worst, when i engage to 'D', the car did not move as soon as I release my leg off the brake but I still felt the slight 'drop' at the rear, ONLY when i step on the accelerator, the car started to move but the "TOK" sound can be heard too.

I have sent my car to PML on 13-June and left it overnight, and the usual excuse of car no problem were said, only checked oil pan and do some software update then sent me away, and problem still persist. Something to do with the clutch to flywheel area?

2nd Problem
On Sunday 17-June, while travelling along West Coast fly over to MCE, speed ranging between 80-90km/hr, I can feel a strong 'backward jerk' when the automatic gear changes, stoppped and restart the car but problem still persist.

Modifications done
So far, I have only added bodykit and upgraded my front brakes to BBK, rear brakes were not touched but brake fluid was changed.

Advice / Problem identification is highly appreciated! Thanks all in advanced.

The Tok sound I ever encountered after driving in heavy rain then left for overnight parking. The next morning during the first drive off will have this symptom. Most probably the handbrake stuck due to rust. You can try parking without the handbrake activated overnight and see if the Tok sound is there.

80-90 should be gears 7-8. Shouldnt have jerking. Does it happen every time during this speed or only one occurrence? If every time then suggest you bring to specialist workshop to let them diagnose soon.
 
Echoing the same sentiments as whiskie. The Tok might be the handbrake being stuck due to rust. I usually wash my car in the evening and only drive it the following morning, giving the rotors and handbrake ample time to rust.

Have you had your ATF changed? If your mileage is coming up to 60k + then its probably time to do so. Replacing gearbox fluid is much cheaper than replacing gearbox.

Have you had your ATF changed? If your mileage is coming up to 60k + then its probably time to do so. Replacing gearbox fluid is much cheaper than replacing gearbox.

Their feedback was "everything looks ok". Probably I will send to a specialist workshop to check, PML is hopeless.

....that you would go back to them to change your gearbox.


Haha probably it's their conspiracy theory. Now say everything is ok, then do fancy things and drag time till warranty over, and hope the gear box spoil at the point of warranty over :cool:.

I just left it as it is since it only happens on wet days/post wash.

Alternatively, since you're still under warranty and know what the problem likely is, bring it back to PML, see what they can do.

Worst case is they'll grease the rear parking brake?
Best case you may get something replaced.

You can consider doing a "pre warranty expiration" check at a BMW specialist workshop. Go back to PML with the list of faults found by workshop. Get them fixed before the warranty runs out.

Bro I did not engage hand brake last night, and the "Tok" sound still exist.

Guess really something to do with transmission to flywheel portion of the car.

May I ask which workshop does this pre-warranty expiration check, and a rough estimate cost?

Dude, go to any of the site sponsor workshop, they are specialised in BMW diagnosis and repairs. Do not feel that just because they are sponsors, they will be expensive, no, I personally have tried 2 of them and found both are experts, give good diagnosis and reasonable cost, when compared to PML.

Just do not compare costs with Japanese/Korean makes because it would not be a fair comparison.

I personally had the Tok sound experience when I took over a 2nd hand 4 years old E60 few years back. The initial weeks had the brake rusting and jerking when moving off from cold starts but the problem disappeared after regular use.

For your case (Dec-June), it could be something deeper and definitely worth the trouble for expert workshop to take a peek.

For my case, I was the 3rd owner. 1st owner 3 years, 2nd owner 1 year.
From what I gathered, the 1st owner probably sold off after the warranty over. 2nd owner is probably a BMW wannabe to have the 'feel'. After checking the records with PML, there were ABSOLUTELY NO changes to ANY of the seals, GB oil, suspension etc, only regular oil change. The 1st 2 owners did not really take good care of the ride internally

Thus the good part of my first year of ownership was spent in workshops changing the seals, oils, GB oil, mountings, suspensions etc. After that, it was a smooth and good driving experience. Thats the reality when purchasing 2nd hand cars especially around the 4th year mark. Do not let this dishearten you on the driving experience of a beemer.

Thanks bro for the reality check. Well its part of my expectation but for my ride I still believe it is within the 'good' range now, as i got the car at about 34K mileage. So is up to me to improve or maintain.

I have already scheduled a diagnostic check with 1 workshop next week. Shall see what they can find for me and what PML will do for me with my report, hopefully. :D
 
Hi WYC86, can't comment on the tok sound when moving off. If it's rust related, not much can be done in our climate.

But i was curious about the 80-90kmh experience. I've had this on my 3er as well, but have usually just put it down to the 8 speed switching to top gear as quickly as possible for efficiency's sake and hence putting the engine out of the torque band, which feels like the car suddenly slows or like some invisible person stepping on your brakes. Is that what you experience?

When i am in manual mode and shift gears up from 7 to 8, this symptom doesnt happen. Could be a completely different issue altogether, but no harm checking. My solution - step harder on the go faster pedal haha.

Hi bro ravashanks, I was on auto, so somehow my speed was cruising between between 80-90km/hr, Leg on and off stepping on the gas pedal, but somehow that day when the gear auto shift down, I can sense the strong inertia/jerk backward, which is not normal when I just took the car, the transmission do it’s job and I dun feel a single thing.

Anyway I have scheduled a full diagnostic check... hopefully they can find something out and I can show it to PML during my current extended warranty period.
 
After reading all the comments, makes me more conscious of mine.
Cos just bought a similar car manufactured Apr 2014 two weeks back. Hopefully all is good, though I did send in for a thorough check at the workshop before I purchased.

Hi everyone. I am newbie and not allow to post title tread.

F30 2016: I have a very loud clunk as your car drops down the far side of a speed hump. This happens when you brake suddenly (You are not aware of the hump then brake and release the brake then drive over a decent speed like 10-25km/hr) and drive over the speed hump. At normal drive over speed hump or even brake, I do not encounter this problem. This was happen once recently and gave me worry if something wrong. The first time happened after 3 months collecting the new car.

Can you please share with me?
 
Hi all, apologies for the late feedback.

Regarding the initial problem of "Tok" sound, apparently it is due to my upgrade brake pads and rotor, every night my car will be washed, and the liquid will cause the brake dust to somehow dissolve and stick to my rotor, thus there will be this problem, and more severe during rainy days where humidity is high.

Regarding the jerking due to travelling, I changed my gear oil during 50K, problem seems resolved.
