Rusty Disk Rotor

After washing my wheels with water, I found that the disk rotors have gone rusty. Is this bad and do I need to change them?

Re: Rusty Disk Rotor

try not to wash the wheels wen the rotors are still hot, u will c the difference....

Re: Rusty Disk Rotor

No need to change them, i guess its quiet common for this to happen. I get it all the time even when the rotors are not that hot. I normally use a rim cleaner so poss could also be a chemical reaction on the steel.

Re: Rusty Disk Rotor

Just drive normally and it'll be gone in a very short while. Nothing to worry about.

Re: Rusty Disk Rotor

Anyone using Zimmermann rotors? There's the normal rust on the main surface during rain etc, but the edges of the discs (perpendicular to the main surface) also showing signs of rust which won't go away.

Anyone else have that problem? Do I need to put some oil or something on it?

Re: Rusty Disk Rotor

Dun worry about rust around the edges of the disc rotors. The edges will never rust through unless you soak your discs in saline water for the next 50 years. If you think that the edges are unsightly then you can sand them down and spray a layer of hi-temp silver or black to cover them up.

No worries of rusty brake discs. For some added care, you should drive your car for about 5mins after washing to dry the pads and brakes just before parking overnight. that will clear all the rust marks and prevent them form occuring the next day.

Cheers

Re: Rusty Disk Rotor

Great, thanks! Was wondering whether it was normal as I never had the problem with the stock rotors - only with the Zimmermanns.

Re: Rusty Disk Rotor

They are all made from steel or other iron alloys. Sure rust one. The only diff is that the stock rotors are painted on the sides so they dun rust there.

dun u put oil...i did that once to get rid of rust...damn stupid..in the end i had to open door n put my foot out to stop caR!!!!!!!! not veyr smart...

Re: Rusty Disk Rotor

Don't put oil!

If you do, you will need to degrease your rotors completely and change the affected brake pads. They are considered useless once contaminated with oil.

Learnt this the hard way with my mountain bike.

Also my motorbike when they didn't tighten the oil drain screw properly and engine oil dripped all over my back wheel. They had to change the rotor and pad for that wheel cos there was no way I would be able to ride safely with them.
