An SAF operationally-ready national serviceman (NSman) died in hospital on Thursday after he was hit by a falling tree outside the Ama Keng training area at Lim Chu Kang.

Lance-Corporal (LCP)(NS) Tan Tai Seng - a transport operator from 63 Combat Service Support Battalion - was standing in front of his military vehicle when the incident happened at 11.50am.

LCP(NS) Tan, 23, was undergoing his in-camp training.

An SAF doctor on site immediately started resuscitation efforts on LCP(NS) Tan. A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) ambulance arrived on site at noon.

At 12.09pm, LCP(NS) Tan was sent by the ambulance to the National University Hospital (NUH). The SAF doctor continued resuscitation efforts in the ambulance en route to the hospital, which arrived at NUH at 12.32pm.

"Despite the best efforts by the SAF doctor and the NUH emergency medicine department, LCP(NS) Tan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 1.08 pm," said a MINDEF statement.

MINDEF and the SAF are assisting the family in their time of grief and are investigating the incident. Police are also conducting a separate investigation.

Sad. He should have been sleepy and hide in the vehicle instead of standing out in the open.

Re: SAF operationally-ready NSman dies during in-camp training

i said it in another posting abt NSF or NSmen dying... the nature of the activities carried out by SAF is mostly dangerous.. add the human factor, it’s even more dangerous.. there is no way to have 0 accidents in such an environment. Of course you can always be more prepared or you can say we could have done this and that… but tree falling?... how to prevent?

This is the question alot of us are asking already. Why do we serve in a country where there are more foreigners then locals. Are we doing NS to protect them or our own countrymen? Why the need to sacrifice 2 yrs of our life (and more in reservists) and risk permanent injuries or death sometimes?

hmm.. this is a good question... pretty much like you can love singapore but not the government.. dont mix up the loyalty to the country and the ruling party... i dont mean i dont like or like PAP.. just an example... cannot everything link back to the FT problem too...

It is a legit question.

For many years, it was never a question. Why has it come up so many times, so often recently? It's to do with sentiments and feelings. Nothing to do with parties.

2 years plus another 10-12 years of reservists is not short time. If the majority in the community serves, no one will say anything. If you become the minority and still serving, would you ask the question too?
