Yea Starbucks way to go! Simply gave up on white elephant coffee machines, too much cleaning and maintenance for a daily morning dose of caffeine. Surprised to see there are a quite a fair bit of coffee connoisseurs in the forum. Valuable thread. Cheers!

I have many white elephants now... Jura, delonghi, nespresso, CBTL, etc. You are right, the key is to make it a point to use.

Yup, inherited one and then gave away and junked one so now it's just the Jura. Wife happy can liao! Jura cannot use coated beans though.

TS started this thread due to cost reasons so did you do costing for 3 persons and eqpt plus beans to get u a cuppa every morning? Maybe quite close to Starbucks house brew tall size? Haha!

Re: Serious Question: Coffee Machines

okay, here is my 2 cents worth about coffee machines for home.

if i was to get a machine i will get this Rocket Espresso Milano

Why? because there are really fine details to extracting a good cup of espresso. The basics to a good latte, flat white or cappuccino are the same, you need to be able to extract good espresso. The perfect shot of expresso you can extract is called a "god shot" but in order to extract a "god shot" you will need to be able to control your water temperature, how long your water flows through your coffee powder, how fine or coarse your grinding is and etc. With a fully manual machine you can control all the settings and you can get a "god shot" but then the question would be, do you have the time to meddle with it? As someone has mentioned, you would need to take care and clean the machine after everytime you use it because your grinder will be oily and your espresso machine will be dirty.

With all that said, alot of the nespresso machines are being used at home because we normally drink 2 or 3 cups a day and the machine is easy to maintain. Other factors like keeping the coffee beans fresh or finishing the coffee powder while its still good may be a problem for home consumer too because we dont consume enough. if you dont have a grinder means the shop would a have to grind for you and once the beans get grinded it will lose its peak taste and body faster compared to being in its ungrinded form.

sorry for the long explanation but to me a good espresso machine is not a cheap investment so i thought i would share what i know with everyone.

you wouldnt want to spend 5k on a good machine and a grinder for it to sit at home as a white elephant yes?

Re: Serious Question: Coffee Machines

I appreciate all the feedback and experience on coffee culture. Yes I think a machine with a grinder is necessary for a good shot. Looks like many are still recommending JURA. I guess the best way to test it is to try it at a demo.

For Kopi Luwak, I personally don't quite accept it when they say "processed in nature's way". The layman equivalent is we drink what comes out of the Civet's arse. And I don't like that idea really. Maybe we should feed the camel with coffee beans n see if it is comparable.

if I were to get another machine or if I could time travel back before I got my automatic this would also be what I will get!

let me tempt you with some important details:

The giotto rocket comes with dual boilers and what this means is separate heat controls for your espresso and hot water.

Then you might ask why is this important? Well, have you tasted burned coffee? this would prevent that problem. Also, the temperature for expresso extraction and steaming your milk is also different. dual boilers will ensure that you always have the right temperature..

and no.. i dont work for them and i dont get a commission.. :p

Re: Serious Question: Coffee Machines

This jerms is a really kopi soh. I like.

For home, my poor nespresso is under utilised. I now gotten lazy and drink starbucks via. When i want nice kopi i go out and sample the various nice cafes mushrooming all over the island.

Re: Serious Question: Coffee Machines

Yes Jerms I totally agree... and also to add on, besides having dual boilers the capacity of each boiler is impt too esp for that 18sec shot and also the pressure to texture the milk nicely

I can never texture my milk like the cafes becos of the lack of pressure on my machine at home.. but at least I do a better job than the likes of Starbucks and Coffee Beans. Goodness, something is definitely wrong with their coaching!
Unless I am going to have an espresso I will try to avoid buying their coffee :p
