SINGAPORE - A curious case of high-rise littering raised the ire of the ward's MP - so much so that she decided to hunt the errant resident down.

When the MP for Marine Parade GRC Ms Tin Pei-Ling discovered that a resident had been disposing tampons out of the window, she spared no effort to look for the culprit - even though it meant combing through 7 floors worth of households.

Last week, the Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that residents had complained of 'diapers' being frequently found at the foot of Blk 444 at Tampines Street 42. The final straw came when their MP, Mr Baey Yam Keng recovered a diaper that was still 'warm', prompting him to search over 12 floors to catch the diaper-throwing culprit.

It therefore came as a surprise when Ms Tin Pei-Ling was caught in the same sticky situation - but with tampons this time.

According to an article in Tuesday's Lianhe Wanbao, the Marine Parade MP was informed on Oct 18 afternoon about the high-rise terror litter at Blk 31 along MacPherson Road.

Ms Tin rushed to the scene, accompanied by a Residents Committee manager and constituency manager, and promptly collected the soiled sanitary pads in a bag.

In an interview with the Chinese evening paper, Ms Tin criticised the culprit for being inconsiderate.

"I spoke to residents from the 2nd to the 8th floor, in an attempt to narrow down the possible culprits."

After spending an hour interviewing the residents on the same day (Oct 18), Ms Tin believes that she has some leads.

"We are still in the process of gathering enough evidence, and will continue to pay close attention to the situation," Ms Tin said.

Let's just say if we are in their shoes.

There will be three paths of thought process.

One, I am an MP, close one eye. Even if it is symptomatic of bigger issues in this district. Risk kenna labelled bo-chup.

Two, I am an MP, cannot close one eye. Assuming the litter was not intentionally directed at me, I would still make sure I take note of this incident and direct someone to look into it.

Three, I am an MP, cannot close one eye. Perhaps someone is directing the litter at me. Cannot let the culprit go. Need to send a message that I am taking it seriously.

It appears to me that some of us will pick the third option as well.

MP is elected for national issue. Tampon or diaper should be left to Town Councillor.

Re: So this is what the MPs are busy with .......

I believe, in addition to Kenn's eloquent discourse, the fact here is whether she's doing it for wayang purposes, in which case $13,000/month is way too much money to spend on a B-grade actress like her (much like how a certain Lui Bin takes the buses and MRT for facebook photo opportunities) vs. a genuine concern for the cleanliness and well-being of the estate, in which case $13,000/month is still way too much money to spend on an MP slash part-time estate cleaner (surely, you could get people to pick up tampons for cheaper than $13,000/month) vs. the need to identify/locate/apprehend the culprit, in which case $13,000/month is STILL WAY TOO MUCH money to pay for an MP/part-time auxiliary policewoman, because that's what we should be paying the SPF to do the damn job full time.

Not bashing for the sake of bashing, but honestly, I cannot fathom what she's trying to prove/show/pretend/act/do here.

That's what we are saying now. But had both turned a blind eye and walked away, would they have been flamed for the apathy and nonchalance?

Looks like a case of damn they do, damn they don't.
