Upgrade your steering wheels to spruce your interior. And since this M-Sport steering wheel is thicker, it is so much nicer to hold. And it has perforated leather sections which also feels nice. See below :

And to get the paddle to function, a relatively simple retrofit is required to pull two wires (if I remember correctly) from the steering column area to the gear shift area. After that, you can use the paddle to shift through the gears which can become quite addictive :).

Hi, how easy (or difficult) to wire the paddle shifts up? Does it only work when you push the gear knob to sports mode?

Hi STR8SIX,

Wiring it is pretty straight, it goes from behind the steering wheel column and then tap unto the upshift and downshift wires under the gear shifter.

FYI, I fabricated my own wire harness, with some wires and the type of "plugs" which can be inserted into the existing connectors. I ordered the "plugs" from a BMW parts website.

On my 2008 E90, it can only shift when it is in DS mode. Not when in D mode.

I read from US forums that depending on the year of the car (although could not determine which year), some E90 will shift while in D. I have tried searching whether can it be coded but I was not successful (only a beginner in coding).

But overall, I'm sure the wiring work can be retrofitted pretty easily by some the local experts retrofiting shops.

Cheers

Thanks for the detailed explanation! Was hoping that the paddle shift steering wheel will be an easy bolt-on option that could bring back the joy of easy shifting I had on my previous ride (Legacy GT, though laggy...). But I kind of reckon that the drive modes in our E90 (mine's a LCI) will limit this shifting option. Nevertheless, thanks for response, guess I will have to pass on this one.
