Hi, I have the same issue, my e90 sounds like a jet aircraft about to take off. My son loves the sound, I hate it :).
Took it to my mech, and he confirmed the problem is my rear axle. He said either the bearings are worn or the gears inside the housing are rubbings against each other. Either way, it shouldn't be happening.

Anyone managed to get a new set or change to recon/2nd hand ones? Cost?

hi Bro,

I recently replaced my cooling coil as well and I am now also getting sounds I never used to hear. Likewise, it only comes up when accelerating, much like air rushing through an intake. Do you know what exactly your mechanic adjusted to fix the issue? My workshop doesn't seem to acknowledge the sound.

Went back to the workshop, the mechanic adjusted something near the steering wheel with a screw driver and it was okay. Don't know if its a similar issue for you.

If it's your rear half shaft axles, You'll need to get them rebuilt by a specialist shop. I'm not sure where my workshop took mine. The insides of the axles are kind of like differentials. The gears inside mine had worn down badly and needed to be replaced.

If it's your rear wheel bearings, then it's a much simpler job. Just buy the parts from stockists, Eng Soon or Min Ghee, and get any cheap workshop to do it. Any workshop will have the tools and ability to replace those.

If you're getting differential whine or grinding, then it's a much more expensive fix. Depending on if it's the ring gear, carrier gear or bearings, the fix can be semi-expensive to quite expensive. The best option might be to buy a used differential from a scrapped car. A new one is just too expensive.
