Sound On Rear Brakes

My E60 just put on a set of 19" rims with tyres 255 frt and 275 rear, vs my old stock 17" rims.
But when I slowly cruise off from my carpark lot in the morning when the car is cold, my rear brakes produce a sound when I tapped on the brakes. Once my car hit the main road and got warm up, that sound not there anymore.

Any bros face the same problem? Could it be solved? I think my brake pad life still have about 5000km to go.

Re: Sound On Rear Brakes

if u fit your OEM rims or any OEM model back on the sound will not be present.

Re: Sound On Rear Brakes

So what caused the sound?

would be inclined to think its the brakes, but i doubt so. coz swapping the OEM rims back on immediately removes any sound.

any possibility of resonance from rims?

Thread starter mentioned that his "rear brakes produce a sound when (he) tapped on the brakes. Once (his) car hit the main road and got warm up, that sound not there anymore." I wonder how does the new wheels cause the brakes to squeal when cold......

And what's "resonance from wheels"?

yes i know. the symptoms are the same as what i am experiencing. on both my previous and current ride this symptom happens when switching to after mkt rims. its far too conincidental that the sound only arise when after mkt rims were fitted on. cant see how this is a brake issue when the sound is no longer present when OEMs r back on when trouble shooting. I doubt this happens on all after mkt rims, but certainly those i have used do cause this noise. Have verified with AD and the noise is not something that poses warranty issues. And yes, checks were made and brakes were deemed fine.

am happy to any suggestions u might have on what might be the cause of the noise given what i have described.

Re: Sound On Rear Brakes

Contrary to your cases, I have no such issues from 3 sets of aftermarket wheels. I have no exact reasoning nor knowledge of what exactly happened to TS' problem, hence I dare not speculate nor advise.

I am more keen to learn from the experts.

Re: Sound On Rear Brakes

without knowing more details i dare not speculate about TS' situation either.

however, for my car, the squealing came about when my brake pads were due for replacement, and with new brake pads, the squeal went away.

waiting for some real expert opinion.

Paiseh........ i not expert but i'm curious know that by changing aftermarket rims will cause squealing sound to the brakes meh???? I thought squealing sound from the brakes are due to the pads finishing or becoz due to cold start.... on those high temp performance brake pads (once after warming up the sound will goes away...)????????

Most likely got to do with the pads and rotors...
yes, my gf Renault Cabrio having the same problem with stock rims.

Went for check & found the rotor & pad almost gone, bite each other & produce sound only in morning & reverse.

Mine also have sound in morning when i move off.. it goes "meow knn..meow.. " cos a cat sleep in my rims..

though i not expert, but it certainly sounded more logical that the sound comes from the pads and rotors.

Luboil, bring to a good workshop and check. Brakes cannot play play, can be life and death matter. That's why I don't dare to advise.

Was told by a mechanic (not fm pml) that this problem is very common with aftermarket wheels, esp coupled with low profile tyres. My brake pads still have abt 20000km to go according to the computer, and definitely no sound at all when I was on my old OEM wheels.

Once warmed up, I don't hear anything and the braking still seems very normal.
Should I send back to pml for a check??? Later they tell me to put back OEM rims then jialat lah....

There are so many BMWs with after-market wheels........ which shop is this?
