Anyone here using SPC petrol here for yr Bimmer?

Last night went to Thomson SPC to buy snacks. paid $2 at the counter and was given a receipt which I was told to SMS and stand to win a $10 petrol voucher. Was also given a leaflet and on it there was this bloke representing his Honda Civic's excellent FC. In it says the FC was 18km/litre on SPC fuel, as claimed by the owner. I know its a piece of sales material, but what I would like to hear is did anyone got anything close to 18km/l FC?

Re: SPC petrol for BMW

He probably drives without aircon, haha...

Re: SPC petrol for BMW

yup definitely not on our BMWs, more like a l.0L with 100% no aircon and 100% highway :)

Re: SPC petrol for BMW

I am using SPC 95 becos of the discount i get rather than the FC! So far about the same FC as the other petrol brand... LPPL....

:) :) :) maybe also lift the foot off the throttle and put to "N" mode on downhill slopes :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

Re: SPC petrol for BMW

I found my car (e39) very sluggish with SPC 95
mobil/esso 95 car feels so much livelier.........

Re: SPC petrol for BMW

Well... I have only heard of Hoda Fit & Jazz doing between 21-24km/litre... Personally for our rides.. i reckon very very impossible...

Re: SPC petrol for BMW

If u reduce the weight of your car by 25 pct then maybe we can expect to see improvement in our FC by 25 pct....ROFL

I second that!
Somehow Mobil/Esso is a bit more responsive and smooth too.

Second that statement about the juice they sell @ Esso/Mobil.
Caltex is pretty good, personally find the engine run a tad quieter than it does on Esso.
Tend to give Shell a miss cause somehow my engine burns rich and the out gas smells as if its loaded with a fair bit of unburnt hydrocarbons.
Used SPC a fair bit too previously (.......yes the discounts are attractive) but felt that the fuel looses its "oomph" fairly quickly after a couple of days in the tank......maybe additives evaporate at a higher rate??

incidentally, do many bros here use 95 instead of 98 as advised?

and are there many who managed to hit the 8ltr/100km or 12.5km/ltr for the 3er (of course this pretty much depend on driving style but assuming normal driving) as stated in the brochure?

Re: SPC petrol for BMW

Hi

I always use 95 because it is a waste of money to use 98. Of course you will notice a longer distance and a slight increase in power when using 98. But no big deal.

Re: SPC petrol for BMW

Guys,

Manufacturer states the usage of 98 octane fuel for proper function of the engine. Usage of 95 might and should cause premature detonation (aka pinging) during high load and low rpm operation. The engine counteracts this by retarding the ignition when it senses the onset of detonation from the knock sensors. Once you pump 98 fuel or higher, the ecu slowly restores the factory advance values but it takes about 50 - 100km depending on its adaptation cycle.

Retarded ignition will lose power and actually decrease the efficiency of the car. With continual detonation, pistons and con rods may be damaged. As such manufacturers program the retardation to protect the engine. As for the efficiency factor, it seems like you get better milage becos you actually travel slower and thus save fuel. (travelling at 80-100km/h is more economical compared to 120/140km/h)

I would sincerely urge BM drivers to use the maximum stated octane rating stated on the fuel cap (this is usually 98 octane). It protects the engine and allows the claimed efficiency and power to be developed.

Cheers.

Good point Rodney. In fact, I go further with 98/V-power cf 95, and dollar for dollar, it is actually cheaper. I did a calculation based on FC and with 98, I actually save 10% on monthly fuel costs.

Re: SPC petrol for BMW

A bit strange for new cars to be rated at 98 RON............. esp when it is diff to find 98 in Euro.........

I just checked and it states that lower than 98 possible on my 523i - anyone else have the same?

Re: SPC petrol for BMW

I tried 95 on my E46 and boy...I never felt it so sluggish before. Am never gonna touch SPC petrol again.
