Speedometer Bottom Cluster Lights

Hi guys,

I am driving a 228i F22 coupe model bought end of october last year, abt 2 weeks ago, i noticed that my speedometer cluster lights when switched on to Auto (Bottom half - fuel gauge & battery meter P sign) (Please see attached picture) area started to go off and on when I am driving in carparks or tunnels or at night.

I tried to switched on to manual mode and still the same issue. Certain times in dark areas when all lights is on, bottom half of the cluster lights is gone, leaving only the speedo and rpm lights on.

Today I brought in to Performance Motors to check and they said there is no issue with the bulb, wiring or wiring insulation and fuse all working fine, they even did a diagnostic test and no error turn up. Then service advisor name David Chan told me they contacted the germany office and they said the 2 series comes with this new adaptive technology speedometer cluster lights which will go off and on at times which I totally dont believe for a second!

He also claims that every and all 2 series will have this new so called technology which i refused to believe at all!

Can i know any bros or sis here who is driving the 2 series coupe or tourer have this same issue as me?

If yes, can you please advise and share any knowledge you have on why this is happening?

Appreciate any advise or replies from any of you.

Many thanks in advance.

It's like that. Speedo lights will change based on the ambient lighting. If it changes when the ambient light intensity did not change, maybe the sensor on the mirror is faulty or covered.

No wonder but i guess they did upgrade this speedo cluster software which they did not tell me about after i service my car and that is why I am having this on my speedo cos this did not happen when i bought the car last Nov.

Many thanks Whiskie for your reply, I feel much at ease now that its normal.
