squeaking sound on brakes

Hi guys,

I changed my rims recently and when my brakes are cold ( in the morning), they would developed a squeaking sound audiable inside the car when i depressed the brakes, moving out of my carpark lot. I went to the rims shop and even mechanics to diagnose this issue but without valid. The sound generated from the brakes would soften once I have been travelling for a distance. I am wondering if any one of you has encountered such probelms, and appreciated any kind souls for advice. My ride now is a e64 n rims are 20".

Thanks

Re: squeaking sound on brakes

Apply anti-squeal grease ......

Re: squeaking sound on brakes

hi i also have been experiencing this problem after i change my rims last week. i am still living with it :)

Re: squeaking sound on brakes

i once had this problem with my E39 back in 1999.

went to the workshop, mechanic did these:

sand down to even out the brake pads, (he used this term)
checked the wheel bearings on both rear wheels,
turned out, right rear wheel bearings worn out, he highly recommended it was time to replace to new ones.
after that, seems like the sound didn't surface at all.

mechanic mentioned, both methods executed to save loads of trouble later.

drove off with new wheel bearings & noticed a BIG difference in smoothness of the wheels. Braking effect was better.

Problem gone :)

hope this can help you bro :)

Normal for cold start ... i reckon ... just do a few hard brake / e brakes ...

Re: squeaking sound on brakes

unless u say the sounds stick with you entire day then there would be problems ...

Re: squeaking sound on brakes

Sometimes the sound is amplified by aftermarket rims. It is really weird but if you have stock rims, put them back on and the noise might go away. It's got something to do with the rims responding to the harmonic frequency generated by the brakes.

Re: squeaking sound on brakes

The aftermarket rims maybe not hub centric ?

Re: squeaking sound on brakes

Thanks for the input. Recently, I tried skimming my rotors as the mechanics define the rotors are uneven causing the sound, but still invalid. The sound still persists. I think it really might be the rims not hub centric as per suggested. Really in dilemma to revert to stock as spend so much on the rims. Still reeling from what other options to do. Any suggestions? Thanks

Re: squeaking sound on brakes

Take all those caliper parts like pins etc .... And dip it in anti squeal grease.

If you like, can use the spray type and spray into the holes / caliper parts etc ...... I read the diagrams to decide where to spray.

Caveat emptor -

If you don't know what you doing don't anyhow spray. I accept no liability.

Re: squeaking sound on brakes

Hi,
I have similar problem too. Upgraded my F10 to 20" rims. Will hear squeaking sound while braking on cold start and reversing.
Was told by the workshop that this is normal because bigger wheels are heavier and it requires more brake force. The brake force applied are calibrated to suit stock rims instead of aftermarket rims (dunno how true is it...). He asked me to upgrade my stock brake to BBK and this will solve the problem. Upgrading to BBK will cost a bomb. So, I decided to live with the sound instead.

Anyway, since my ride is still very new (2wks old - did only 700km), I think the sound will go away after the brake pads are more "seasoned" with the new rims. This was the case for my previous ride.

Dear Bro,

You are right. Upgrading to a new set of brakes is going to be costly. I even skim my rotors to even out the flatness and changed new brake pads. The noise still persists. I hope your method on brake pad works cos I still lives with the noise. Until now I haven't found a solution. Please let me know if you found a solution. Thanks
