stalling issue with E46 320i

Sigh, since 6 months after collecting my 320i, the car will intermittently stall. It has happened 6 times over the slightly over 3 years of onwership. PML have changed 4 fuel filters, 1 set of fuel float and level sensor, all to no avail.

It usually happens when the fuel tank is showing between 1/4 to 1/2 tank. The car will idle smooth like anything, but the minute you touch the accelerator, instead of the rev going up, the rev will drop down to zero and cuts the engine. There's no way you can move the car, and all you need to do is go get a cup of coffee, wait half hr, and everything will be back to normal.

Happened again just last saturday in takashimaya's carpark. Drove the car in, and this time PML says ECU recorded cam sensor fault, hence they are pretty confident of solving the mystery. Apparently the sensor is $300, and must plus labour. Interesting isn't it, under warranty, cannot detect fault, the minute out of warranty, cam sensor fault detected!

Sorry to hear about that. You can always get a second (or third) opinion from any of the non-PML workshops.

If it's out of warranty, you can try and bang table/write letter.

Good luck. Hope it's solved soon. BTW, what's the mileage on the car, and any mods done to it?

nope, stock like anything, and has 57k km on the clock.

Re: stalling issue with E46 320i

think i got the same problem as us you! the last time i repair is last mth, happen to me 3 time in 2 yrs. BVO told me is because of the fuel pump! hope they r right!

Sorry to hear about your car problem. I hope this final fix will solve it.

Since you have experienced the same issue throughout and PML were unable to fix it while it was under warranty, you might want to speak with the management or seek legal advice on your options if they refuse to discuss the matter. But up to you if you wanna go that route cos you might not think it's worth it to go to all that trouble.

Honestly, I don't think it's very fair that anyone be made to pay for a fault that the dealer was unable to fix for 3 warranty years.

Re: stalling issue with E46 320i

gee... i thought only the 318s have this problem... it is rare that a 6 pot does this though...

you might want to try to talk to Aftersales in PML... go higher than the service advisor... if it is a recurring problem that they could not fix, then it should be their cost...

Re: stalling issue with E46 320i

sigh, I don't mind paying them if they can solve the problem, my fear is that they change the whatever cam sensor, and the problem resurface again!!!! Stalling seems to be a known issue with quite a few 6 potters! My suspicion is the fuel pump too, but PML flatly says no on all the occassion. Gonna go collect car today, and really wanna see what CSA's explanation to the issue is.

Re: stalling issue with E46 320i

I had the same problem but only once in 5 years of my 320. The problem was also due to cam shatf sensor as what happened to you lately. Since then, I sold it and change to a new E60.

For your case, bang table and chair to get it change free of charge blameing PML not doing a good job.

Re: stalling issue with E46 320i

Just an update, collected the car, and csa claimed this time sorted out for sure already. Even showed me the modic report indicating the fault code. He said cam sensor will give exactly the symptoms that I described...knn then under warranty 3 years don't change, make me stall on the road sweat a few times. Wanted to charged me over $300 for that particular repair, after banging table and whatever that was in my way, he agreed to waive that.

ps: anyone noticed that the service centre is now more secluded from the showroom, machiam like got glass door and cubicle to keep all the CSA in. Wonder if this has anything to do with too many people creating too much noise, and "disturbing" the potential new car buyer.

Re: stalling issue with E46 320i

then next time got to bang on the glass rather then on the table!

Not sure which one, I didn't have to pay for it finally, as it was claimed under warranty. They waived the modic programming fees too.
