Start Problem

At times, when I insert the key in the slot.
An indicator light would come up and the car would not start.

Re-inserting the key solves the problem.
This happens more often that not after I stop the car and decide to start again.

Is this a problem? what is happening?
am driving a e90 320i

Re: Start Problem

you shld replicate this problem to PML, ask them to run a diag on ur car.

Re: Start Problem

did u make sure every time u try starting the car with proper stepping on your brake pedal? sometime I felt the same, but I step harder onto the brake pedal it will start up.
also when your gear stick were in 'R' or 'D'. the engine won't start too.
hope this help.

Re: Start Problem

yah, of late i have to step real hard in order for the engine to fire up, unlike when i first got the car, a simple tap would get her running. was told its 'normal' from PML, as usual...

Re: Start Problem

Sure that it's an E90 and not BMW beta testing their new Triumph cars (with all the idiosyncracies of English sports cars) on E90 mules? Because,

1) Taking out the key and reinserting to start
2) stepping harder on the brake pedals to start

all sound so reminiscent of the mystic methods required to start an english sports car.

Re: Start Problem

in my experiences, stepping harder it because the brake pump its working up the proper pressure while you trying to engage the brake pedal, and therefore it void engine being start up. its a safety and pre-cautious measure. if you like to put a little patient say 2secs after you have fully insert the key, then only engage on brake pedals then press to start the car you'll not need to step so hard. don't believe you try. when we jus got the new car we are very stranger to the car we act extra care towards the car cos its brand new ma, therefore you tend to do this process insert, step brake then press start button. I bet after weeks & months doing so, by then you should be able to start the engine while you try to close your door (multitasking). myself something so kan chiong spider till I accidentally press start button before even I fully insert the key while my key its in the key hole. but if you had press start button followed by inserting the key fully, with brake pedals fully engage, the engine will start up too. jus take a sec of delay.

Re: Start Problem

well it's not the brake. I stepped on the brake.

Problem is that when I insert the key, a funny sound comes up and a yellow indicator light appears that says the steering wheel is locked. Can't start the car.

Re-inserting the key again solves the problem.

The problem is that this is intermittent. sometimes it doesn't occur while other times i have to re-insert the key 2-3 times.

Is there something wrong?? please advise.

Re: Start Problem

sound strange, my understanding its our steering is program lock/unlock automatically.
my advise its you give PML a call, try describe your problem to them.
good luck, hope you got it solve and back to share with the rest of us.

Re: Start Problem

The car might need to be reprogrammed to recognise the key. What about your other key, got similiar problem also?

Re: Start Problem

sent to PML today.
The CSA was good, a Mr Teo.

anyways, it seems that a few other cars had this problem before. Some of them just need a re-set of the computer, others had to take out the steering column to replace the sensor.

Anyways, they re-set the computer for me and said that the problem appears to be solved. Ask me to come back if the problem appears again, if so then the sensor would need to be replaced.

My only gripe is that how come they can't check the sensor too (ok, that means my car would take 2 days in the workshop), and also when they re-set the computer, all my settings were gone. I had to painfully re-set them again. A good service method would be for them to note down my settings, re-set the computer and the input my settings back. Piece of cake for electronics. And I can drive off without any gripes.

Re: Start Problem

I had my sensor replaced. In the process, they screwed up my steering wheel alignment such that when I was going straight, the steering wheel was not at 12 O'clock position. So, had to resend my car in. After that, when I collected my car a few days later, the steering wheel made a funny groaning noise when i turned the wheel. In the car went again. PML really got no QC checks. So, maybe resetting your car maybe the least of your problems ;)
