Thicker Oil for over 100000km mileage cars

I am glad and proud to announce that my 2 babies have both clocked more than 100k km recently.

Also had the pleasure to meet up with a BMW hiadee in KL recently who drives an E46 with dunno >150k km on the clock. He told me unlike SG where we normally don't keep our cars beyond 10 years, they do in Msia and some old models are still running including the E36s.

He also shared that most of them uses a thicker oil for the older bimmers, like instead of 0w-40 Mobil One and 5w-40 Shell Helix Ultra, they would use a 5w-50 oil. Some even use the M3 oil 10w-60 on the normal 3 series.

Hiadee also advised I should start thinking of using 5w-40 on my 335i instead of 5w-30 since it has also crossed the 100k km mark.
I like to think that what he says may make sense, as there are lotsa old bmws in Msia.

How are those local drivers with older bimmers oiling their cars, also with thicker oils?

If the ride is driven aggressively or has an ultra long OCI then I guess changing to extra heavy oils can help prolong the life and agony of the ride ......

The basic rule is to make sure that the oil is specced for the ride. I tried heavy oils and they didn't make much of a difference for my rides. Some cheap heavy oils (xW-50/60 etc) actually offer less lubrication to the critical parts.

What is more important to me however, is the
(i) brand and quality of the oil
(ii) frequent oil changes
(iii) proper service and maintenance

For info, I did my oil changes at 4k intervals (for FI) and 6-8k intervals (for NA) but this was because I whacked the cars really hard. Don't forget the transmission oil and other fluids as well.

All the cars I have driven, including one which I whacked from brand new condition to 300,000km when the COE ran out (was on xW-40), didn't have major issues other than the typical wear and tear problems.

Do an UOL test & it could tell u the health of your car.

Re: Thicker Oil for over 100000km mileage cars

The UOA need to make sure that it covers the 100 and 40 cst, elements as well as TBN/TAN ..... Benchmarking is also needed to compare results ..... Will be good to do this before buying the ride if possible ....

Not too sure. But feels ok for me.

Just wanna monitor if the thicker oil will make fuel consumption higher or not.

Please keep us posted.

Interested to know how the thicker oil performs.

Re: Thicker Oil for over 100000km mileage cars

I have been using 5-40. my car just pass 100km. Should I continue with that?

Re: Thicker Oil for over 100000km mileage cars

Both my rides well past 100k, both on 0-40 no problem so far. IMHO changing oil frequently is more impt than slight differences in viscosity grade unless you regularly gun your engine.

Re: Thicker Oil for over 100000km mileage cars

I also say. After talking to an 'expert' who initially advised me to use 5w-40 on my e92 335(which is using recommended 5w-30 now), I told him that I don't kiam-ka-na on EO one. He thought I change EO every 20-25k km ...WTF !

I told him I now kia-see, kia-su, kia-everything since COE so high so my EO changes every 7km....then he said..."aai ya, like that no problemato....".

So the verdict for me is "Just change the oil regularly n stock with the recommended weight"

Wow 400k !

That's a lot ... Did the engine block require any overhauls ? At least one I guess?
