As long as the OD is the same - will not affect speedo.

Assuming same rotational mass -

Width affects the shape of contact patch.

Narrow and long patch good for linear acceleration.

Wide and short patch good for cornering.

A follow-up question. My current tyres are 245/45R18s. I know that the 245 represents the width of the tyre while the 45 represents the aspect ratio. I've assumed that these figures are driven largely by the type of rims I'm using as well.

Without knowing much about my rims, do you know if it's possible for me to use any other type of tyre specs (keeping to the 18" tyres), e.g. 235/45s or 245/40s etc.?
