Traffic light - do you engage N or D

Hi all,

I have been engaging D and brake of course..:) while at traffic lights. But I was told by a mechanic that to use N Puzzled as I was told to use D and brake by another mechanic last time.

What do you guys do?

Re: Traffic light - do you engage N or D

for me, i just engage N coz i'm lazy to hold on to the brake.
i think both ways r fine....

Re: Traffic light - do you engage N or D

There are pros and cons with both ways.

Leave in D and you will need to brakes to keep the car from creeping forward. If you just did a hard braking from "high" speed to a complete standstill, using the foot brakes may cause brake disc warpage due to floating caliper design.
Leave in N and the ATF will not flow through the gearbox to cool the system down and if the lights change, your response time is slower.

Best action (IMO) is to leave in D while at the lights to let the ATF run while applying the parking (hand) brake to stop the car.

Cheers

Gee, i have always been doing this but never realised what you just said. Thanks!! very informative. I'm lazy to step the brakes too but always want to overtake people...hehehe...plus i think handbrakes are cheaper to change right?? btw, are they connected to the rear or front wheels....RWD system i a bit blur.

the handbrakes in the car is quite lousy. need to pull it really tight to stop the car from moving forward. i gave up after a while and use the foot brakes instead.

Re: Traffic light - do you engage N or D

I just do what the manufacturers assume most drivers to do... just put on D other than Parked or Reversing.

Re: Traffic light - do you engage N or D

Err.. si mi "D" huh? I either engage N or step on the clutch..kekekekkeek

Re: Traffic light - do you engage N or D

after i slow down my car to a stop, i will relieve the footbrake and engage Park at traffic light.

7er has no handbrake, but a 'fingerbrake' button and i am always lazy to press it while the car is in D position.

there is a autopark feature that combines handbrake while in D, however didnt like it.

so Park position without fingerbrake got any problem?

Re: Traffic light - do you engage N or D

D is the preferred method unless I know the waiting time gonna take a while, then I will shift to N + handbrake. Normally lazy so just leave it on D + brake.
But normally I will step lightly on the brake, even on a hard stop I will ease off the
brake pressure a little bit.

The hand brake goes to a little drum brake mechanism within the rear discs. So they are not affected by heat and if you apply the brakes when the car is stationary, brake shoe wear is non-existant.

Bro, it depends on how hard you brake to a stop... as a rule of thumb, any speed above 120kmh down to a dead stop (like stopping for red lights junctions), you should apply the parking brakes (for you with a finger, hah hah, expensive car mah...)and leave the trans in D. If you drive around very limo like then do what ever is the most lazy cos the brakes will not have time to heat up that much and your discs are really huge....

Cheers

N or D?if me i put both! can anot?lol..joking..hmm my mom puts it to park, when she reached the lights...so y answer is not N & not D..mines P

errr... i slow down the car everytime using footbrake. only until car totally stationary, then i set the geat to P. cant seems to set it to N because i lazy to shift it. i dont apply handbrake (finger) when car is in P position because i lazy to release handbrake to move off. i blur liao - just to clarify, parking brake is not handbrake (fingerbrake) right?

i hope the P position dont spoil the car since i like to do it at every traffic light stop.

Re: Traffic light - do you engage N or D

call me paranoid.... but i never let my foot off the brake when there are other cars approaching from behind or already behind me... cause all u need is some fool who can't brake in time and slam into u and propel u forward towards an open junction or another car.... with brakes on.... u still have a fighting chance of saving ya front!!!

Bro, the P on your transmission stands for "Park" It disconnects your transmission from your engine and engages a toothed gear to fix your drive shaft stationary. In P, your transmission also stop flowing the ATF into the cooler. Please leave your car in D and engage the finger brake.

Cheers

Re: Traffic light - do you engage N or D

At traffic lights, especially on if i am the 1st car, i will

1) Step on my clutch & hold just before biting point.

2) Rev rpm at 3000+

3) Watch pesdestrain crossing red man to come on, anticipate green light.

4) Popped the clutch and shout YEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAA!

Having said that, i think it will be healthier (just by a thinny weely bit) in the long run by putting to N whenever long idle is anticipated. Will put less strain on the torque converter - if any at all. Conclusion: It doesnt matter at ALL!!!

i will turn on auto-fingerbrake feature with D. this will automatic handbrake the car while it is still in D at 0 kph. should do the same right. thanks yendor.
