Leave in D and you will need to brakes to keep the car from creeping forward. If you just did a hard braking from "high" speed to a complete standstill, using the foot brakes may cause brake disc warpage due to floating caliper design.
Leave in N and the ATF will not flow through the gearbox to cool the system down and if the lights change, your response time is slower.
Best action (IMO) is to leave in D while at the lights to let the ATF run while applying the parking (hand) brake to stop the car.
Cheers
the handbrakes in the car is quite lousy. need to pull it really tight to stop the car from moving forward. i gave up after a while and use the foot brakes instead.yendor said:There are pros and cons with both ways.

I'm lazy to step the brakes too but always want to overtake people...hehehe...plus i think handbrakes are cheaper to change right?? btw, are they connected to the rear or front wheels....RWD system i a bit blur.

7er has no handbrake, but a 'fingerbrake' button and i am always lazy to press it while the car is in D position.
there is a autopark feature that combines handbrake while in D, however didnt like it.
so Park position without fingerbrake got any problem?
yendor said:Bro, it depends on how hard you brake to a stop... as a rule of thumb, any speed above 120kmh down to a dead stop (like stopping for red lights junctions), you should apply the parking brakes and leave the trans in D. If you drive around very limo like then do what ever is the most lazy cos the brakes will not have time to heat up that much and your discs are really huge....

pingman said:errr... i slow down the car everytime using footbrake. only until car totally stationary, then i set the geat to P. cant seems to set it to N because i lazy to shift it. i dont apply handbrake (finger) when car is in P position because i lazy to release handbrake to move off. i blur liao - just to clarify, parking brake is not handbrake (fingerbrake) right?
i hope the P position dont spoil the car since i like to do it at every traffic light stop.
yendor said:Bro, the P on your transmission stands for "Park" It disconnects your transmission from your engine and engages a toothed gear to fix your drive shaft stationary. In P, your transmission also stop flowing the ATF into the cooler. Please leave your car in D and engage the finger brake.
