Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

but they always get away with not giving us a replacement car...though it isnt quite an issue since many have a 2nd car...

even stinge on the taxi voucher...brrr

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

I had a similar issue with my 330. Battery went kaput - but the system told me steering wheel failiure. AND it was in Great World City car park - maybe that parking has something with Bimmers and the 3.0I6 engines? :p

But they were very nice to me - everything free of charge, handed me 4 taxi vouchers first day and 4 next day when i went to alexandra and they had to keep the car for another day. Also fixed a couple of other niggles I had earlier.

Look at it this way - the car you are driving is an engineering marvel. It is not something simple like a pair of pliers. Every brand will have lemons - EVERY one. I have had issues with Maseratis and Mercs before this, and I will rate PML's service just a shade below both, but I cannot fault them.

Looks like they came through for you too! So sit back and relax. I can also report that in the 3 months that I drove the car after this battery job before selling it, it didnt malfunction once... in my case they told me they had replaced the battery and apparently that was a "standard procedure". I checked that they had, indeed, replaced the battery. Most likely same for your case?

Enjoy the car! Remember, if you spend 40K on a Daihatsu Copen, it can also develop problems - but 100% guarantee that their service will be full of sh!t...

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

Latest update: Kg Arang people called and said that the battery is totally gone to the dogs so they will install a new one, monitor for a bit then call me with an update later around lunchtime.

Yes agree with you that PML service so far has been good - except that I didn't get the taxi vouchers!

Ok that cannot be a coincidence right? haha, I will park near Zion Rd food centre if I want to go to Great World City the next time ...

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

Don't bust an artery over this tiny issue bro. The BMW Assist people did all they are supposed without any unjustifiable delay. They are good at what they do, though I only had one experience of trying their service out on my 6er.

It's got nothing to do with the BMW brand. Remember, the 6er, like many high end automobiles these days, is jam packed with electronic gadgetry, sensors and all that jazz everywhere, not to mention IDRIVE. You probably have a low tolerance for electronic failure thats all. I don't know of one 6er that is free of bugs, big or small. It takes patience to iron them out, and once done, it's a sweeeeeeeeeeeet cruiser. Besides, my frequent visits to the service centre gets me the latest version of the IDRIVE firmware, which fixed many other problems that I am unaware of. That, I'm very much appreciative of.

I had tons of tiny problems with my 650i but nonetheless were well taken care of by PML. Battery flat is common issue coz in the 6ers, some of the sensors remain in the switched 'on' position even after the ignition is turned off. And 3 months is pretty much what it'll take to wipe that battery dry.

So, chill (advice from a fellow 6er owner).

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

Thanks man, that's good advice/info and will keep it in mind. Is that what you have experienced, i.e. your battery going flat in 3 months? If so, I will make sure to go check the battery this August ...

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

mine coming 5th month hope nothing happen.hahaha

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

I would strongly recommend monitoring the battery insofar as you can. A small, relatively cheap multimeter should do the trick - all you need to measure is the current output (I think! and keep track). If it started dropping rapidly (depends on the temperature, car usage etc. etc. as well) - be wary! Since they are going to replace it - no need to go aftermarket yet.

Hmm... Zion Road food court is not a good idea methinks. Park in the lane next to the church - relatively quiet and low traffic too. Parked the 3'er there loads of times.

Mine went flat close to 5 months. I ignored the error message indicating that some electrical sensors are still on when the car is off.

I didn't give a crap as I had no time to waste making a trip down to the dealership. And besides, the 6er is my weekender, so it's not that unbearable (i.e. the error messages). This was until one day I got a new error message - 'active steering failure', and it went into limp mode. Fortunately for me, I was just getting ready to leave for a party.

Verdict? Dead batt. The technician found 4 sensors that were constantly in the 'on' state. Reflashed the IDRIVE firmware and viola! 6er as good as new again...even fixed an alignment problem in the gps screen.

So, relax, the 6er is a marvellous GT and you'll grow to love it more each day. It's one sexy muther******......

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

Is it becos u din drive ur car enough? I hv been wif mine for close to 2 yrs but my batt is still running fine.

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

No way man, I drive my car every day!

Update: At around 4pm, I got a call and the guy at PML told me that he had bad news for me (I liked the way he set it up nicely so that the whole thing was not a shock). He said that they have installed the new battery but that he needs to now put in new firmware and then run more tests which will take it into tomorrow, i.e. Wednesday.

He then said that sorry, they don't have a car to loan me and many apologies for the inconvenience. Taking my wife's cue (as well as one of the fellow brothers here in an earlier post), I casually mentioned that I will be renting a car and charging it to them. He then said to wait about half an hour and to see what he can do for me.

About 15-20min later, he calls up and says, "sir I have good news for you" (I like how he sets me up to be a happy camper). He goes on to say that they have miraculously "found" a car somewhere and asked what time I'd like to pick it up, or whether someone like my sales rep can deliver the car to me. I said, "how wonderful" and told him that I'd pick it up myself.

So now there's a burgundy 320i sitting in my car space downstairs ...

Bravo to PML service!!!

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

delrosa, nobody say Porsche service is better. In fact the most knowledgeable service guys for me is a toss between Mercedes and Lexus in my limited knowlege - i never experience hong seh before for example.

some Porsche service mechanics, because of the recent sales spike, are very junior. Press button on the OBD2 diagnostic also I have to walk at least one of them through. But the car is bloody reliable though and feels bulletproof simply because porsche did a lot of evolution, not revolution. the flat6 has been on the same structure since the watercooling started on the boxster. so by now all the bugs totally ironed out.

but ... haha .. the new DFI engine on the 2009 cars... watch out man... skali like the debacle they had for the watercooled crap engines they first had, takes 3 years to iron out the bugs.

Bro think U got me wrong, I not saying or suaning you ah. I am trying to save and/or waiting to strike toto 1st prize so I can buy a used Boxster Cab or E46 M3 Cabrio as a 2nd aka weekend outing car. Regardless of service, I will still buy that car except I will go to a workshop I trust to do my maintenance thats all. Unless its a warranty service then have to send it in. :)
