Hi i am driving a 05 model and my transmission is jerky only at 2nd to 3rd gear.

have been to pml to change ATF and done software update, it has improved but still does not

elimintate the problem. Could it be gear box problem? It is not very serious but still noticeable. Can anyone advice what could be the cause and rectification method.

Your advice will be greatly appreciated

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

There are a couple of threads that has discussed the 520 gear box problem. This is inherent to all 520.

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

assuming that all the gearboxes are similar ZF units throughout the 5-series E60 range, that probably means that the engine has some flat spot at the 2-3 shift point. A simple software upgrade will solve that!

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

thanks alot bro. just want to affirm it is not gear box problem. btw any one can tell me if there is a gear box problem what is the symtom like

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

i guess u have to live wif it,i had that problem since day 1(new car) till the day i sell away the car the problem keep coiming back once awhile.FYI i had done 2 times software update & even send the car in PML several times but problems still cannot solve

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

hi bro thanks for ur info, btw after the software update i feel that that upshifting of the gear tends to need higher RPM then usual before it shift to higher gear can anyone pls advice. Many thanks

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

as for my 520i...even after software upgrade the jerks always come in about 40kmh where the car tends to shifts too early and cause the car jerking wanting to stall... ( especially after a u turn or slowing down for humps...) the car has no problem when in high speed though...

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

This problem is inherent and well documented on the 520i.. But do we have to live with this problem? Good money was spent on this car and I don't think we should expect less.. Everytime my car decide to go into a spasm with friends on board, I feel embarrassed.. Maybe more of us should kick a fuss with PML until they find a solution..

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

do we have to live with the problem? haha...by the 3rd time you send the car back without solving the problem i guess have to live with it

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

But this is a normal thing called .... `between gears'. If you expect better you'd need a 7Gtronic or a Lexus 8-speeder. If you expect perfection there's this thing called CVT ... or if you think you can do better there's a manual 6-speeder.

If there's a torque hole in the engine somewhere, the software cannot fix it. It's like cutting the legs of a table to make it stable. Because there are a LIMITED number of transmission maps, you fix one part you lose one part.

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

hi guys.. sorry to drag tis thread out again but surely tis cant be normal? the car actually has spasms (like asthma).. my previous E39 520i was as smooth as silk..

has anyone had tis problem rectified? if there are inherent gremlins in the transmission with the E60s (520is) then PML should make a concerted effort to solve them IMHO..

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

drop in 3 litre engine... change 3 litre TC... gao tim :lol2:

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

sorry to bring up an old thread, but i have read through many other threads and seems that this problem cannot be solved. has it been resolved or made better in any way recently? thinking of getting a end '04 520i but if this problem cant be solved then i'll be looking at other alternatives. also, if the car is no longer under PML warranty, how much will we be charged for software upgrades?

Re: transmission jerky on E60 520

Hi guys,

Yes.. I had this priblem on my 2005 520i since day1 when I took delivery. The CSA did say to me that its inherent on the 2.2litre. She kinda said something like there's a flat spot and it couldnt be fixed with SW upgrade flash.

Anyway for me, I noticed this 'asthma effect' only occassionaly when I am making a turn. Then I checked the forum and just deduced that it comes on around 40km/hr range.. so I decided to work around it and whenever I'm going into a turn, I make sure I keep it away from the 40km/h range by either shifting to S mode prior to doing my turns. Like when I am in the ECP and I know I am going to exit soon, I will shift to S mode to allow it ample time for the S mode to come on and before I exit. Or u shift into Manual mode and downshift to 3rd gear ...

Hope thats helpful
