Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

Which still leaves me with one of the original questions:

How much would a set of 162s (assuming both 225 front and back) with decent, non-runflat tyres likely going to cost me?

Many thanks again!

If I'm not wrong, only PML hv type 162 rims. If you are not in a rush, visit some of the tyre shops and check if they bringing in or can they bring in for you..IMO.

Otherwise, PML will charge you very high which I think is not worth.

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

DriveAllDay,

I paid a pretty sum for my car. I got the car with many options from factory. Including the Styling 162 with Michelin RTF PS2 tyres. For your info, the front is 225/40/18 with 8 x 18 wheels and the rear comes with 255/35/18 and a 8.5 x 18 wheel.

You asked if you can fit both 8 and 8.5 staggered wheels to a 225/40/18 tyre. Answer is yes. Provided you go with wide 225/40/18 tyres in the first place. Brigestones are good for this wide width. Michelin makes for narrower tyres.

Please ask PML Parts for pricing of wheels. Outside, a performance set of 4 tyres in 225/40/18 spec will cost you about $1200 upwards. For the brilliant PS2, expect to pay more. You may just want 4 pieces of 8 x 18 to make life easier for yourself.

I am glad for the staggered set up. Helps with excessive torque when cornering and adds stability. Shove from the back is huge too.

These are just my opinions. I am not an expert. I have learnt all of the above in the last 6 months. Before that, I didnt know what BMW stood for!

Cheers

Styling 162 PML list price $984 (b4 10% disc) per piece. Goodyear Eagle F1 225/40 about $240. So you are looking at approx. $4,500 per set.

I believe that the straggering size between front and back is what captured in BMW brochure for E90. It was strange for me that only for certain style, we would need to stagger.

Any body knows why BMW is recommending this?

Staggered rims are not uncommon with rear-wheel driven cars like BMWs. Can be 17" staggered, 18" staggered, 19" staggered etc. Mistraele has explained why staggered rims with fatter tyres at the rear is useful if high-powered cars.

Thanks a lot to Bro mistraele and T6 for all the advice!!!

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

hi all,

need some advice on the followings,

tyre
1) does the tyre 'run flat' type allows the car to travel in case it's puncture or is it the car which built with reinenforce frame that makes it possible.

Rims
1) i hv a 17' inch rim( bought fr PML) for my E46 and thou of getting it on the E90 but the SE says the fitting is not suitable ( She's not refering to the cosmetic look).
In this case, as i read on some posting recommending getting rims from outside rims shop, how do we know if the fitting is suitable.

2) any comment for the Acs 18" type IV on E90 compare to type 162?

thanks in advance for advice on the above.

Question:
When you guys upgrade/change the run-flat stock tires to the after market tires,
what happen to the TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) sensor? Thks!

you need to reset the TPMS sensor everytime, not only by changing tire also after you pump up at any tire pump, if not your car warning system light up like a x'mas tree. :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: within 10 mins of driving.

once reset the TPMS senor just drive normally after 10 mins the system will take the lastest tire pressure reading for all 4 tires. and the process again and again.

I bought my 320 with the 162. Everyone likes it.
I drove 2 more e90 with the factory rims. No difference with the pickup or the drive. The only problem with the 162 is that it dirties very easily. For some reason, dirt and brake dust love the smooth surface of the rims. I wanted to get 8.5 for the rear but then the thought of changing tires for rotation stopped me. Don't think many will notice the diff between 8.0 front and 8.5 back cause the curve of the 8.0 rims already quite extreme.
I paid just above 5 for those 162 with run flats from PML. Not sure what tires they are tho.

Go for those rims. It makes the car look much better. But having said that, I secretly wish you won't change cause I want my 320 to be abit different on the road. hhahahhahahah.... Cheers

well said, even with my 5 spoke rims i already find the brake dust a problem.
and yes that the the way if you want to mod it must make a diff. be it better for the car or not and some mods are :argue: some mods are :) .

choose wisely cos the $$$ is yours, and rarely the mod you spent, then selling 2nd hand worth much. i have done that before.

for rims it is something that makes a big diff, $$$ will be well spent. well don't hope too much if you sell 2nd again. happy can already. just my 2 cents

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

Thanks for the inputs.

Will hang on with my stock rims for the time being, although I REALLY like the 162s. Have to weigh the opportunity costs here. For $5K, that's
- A really nice holiday (or 2)
- A mid-high range Cannondale mountain bike
- Another 7 shares in Google (made 30% return on it the since I bought it last month)
- Another small reduction in my mortgage (damn bank just sent me another rate increase - 4th time this year! Am so going to drop Std Chart when my tie-in period ends)

At the meantime, I will oogle at your rims...
