hmm true. sincere buyer plus honest seller wont stop me from doing that..
usually do a check need to pay? and the duration?
Yes - the sum is small to get an ease of mind. Probably just takes max 1-2 hours if they have a free time slot to plug the OBD in to have a look.

I've spoken to the guys at PML about a recent case when they detected tampered mileage. Poor buyer got duped so badly and he thought he had a car under warranty sold by the dealer.

Dealer of course said that they received the car as it is from the seller...

Most owners of cars will NOT tamper their mileage as its illegal and not many ppl know who to look for to do such stuff. Most of the time if not all are actually dealers who do such tampering, its so common among the used car industry. But of course there are exceptions where cars owners do such things. Its really unethical.

i've bought 3 cars off the used market, and only 1 new car. i think after a while you are able to tell if the car's mileage has been tampered with...

it's simple, check the interior condition of the car. a car with 100,000kms on it will not look like one with 30,000kms on it. if you've driven a car long enough you should know this.

i dunno if any of you agree with me, but it's easy to tell.

the leather seats, the steering wheel, the gear/brake leaver and other leather/upholstery parts.

i was shopping for a car for the wife last few weeks. when i test drive the jap cars at various dealers, they all look damn suspicious. the interior condition looks too crappy for something with 50-60K mileage on them. I eventually settled for a Hyundai - the interior looks spanking new for a 4 year old ride, and the mileage is 53K.

interior also can be rewrapped to look new..best is to contact the authorised dealer and check the mileage in the ECU, or on their records.

Wow. Didn't know this lowlife type of practices still exist.

it's usually not worth the effort or money i think. if the seats and steering can be rewraped, fine, but the dashboard etc cannot fake

Re: Used Car Dealers Tampering With Odometer ?

i've heard of an owner tampering with the odometer of his BMW from 80000km to 25000km. First the car was offered to the used car dealer 4 months ago, and then to AD with the new mileage at 25000km recently which subsequently offered the car to used car dealer. Lolz time difference of the different mileages was within around 4 months... Best part.. the used car dealer remembered the number plate of the rare model BMW and rejected the sale.

My experience with a used car dealer was really classic. . Went to view the car, mileage was showing some 30+k, saw the sticker on the windscreen showing the last oil change was 80+k. Apparently the dealer forgot to remove the sticker after they tempered with the odo.. Dumb dealer.
