We don't have athletes who are willing to make sacrifices: Tan Howe Liang

Yes, individual and group and if we lose any, we will blame everyone and maybe can get Special Medal like the one they wanted to give the south Korean fencer

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feng_Tianwei

Feng Tianwei was born on 31 August 1986[4] in Harbin, Heilongjiang, People's Republic of China.[5] She is the only daughter of Feng Qingzhi, a granary worker, and his wife Li Chunping, an employee of a department store. Feng's parents, who were poor, lived frugally for years to pay for her table tennis training. Her father suffered from multiple sclerosis, but she was not told how severe his illness was. He died in 2002, weeks before Feng tried out for China's national B squad. Although Feng topped the qualifying matches a month later and was called up for the national team in 2003, she suffered from a long illness; a source close to her said it was "because she missed her father too much".[6][7] Feng left China in 2005 to play in the Japanese professional league. While there she was spotted by Liu Guodong, then a coach with the Singapore Table Tennis Association, in 2006.[7] In March 2007 she was invited to train in Singapore under the Foreign Sports Talent Scheme. She became a Singapore citizen in January 2008.[5]

She sure is worth a lot of respect.

But people also not against her generally. More towards the policy.

seeing how she has improved
i actually respect her as an individual more than seeing her as a national glory
the olympics is savouring the best of sportsmanship, and she has outshined all of us

Please lah, Feng is as Singaporean as any pure bred/born here..

When she lost her match, she blamed it on not being able to recover from the previous match 2 days ago..

Phelps went on to bag a few Golds in separate events within hours of each other also never complain..

That Gu lady also blamed her loss on the German referee bias,,

Typical Singaporean

Already they have learnt the art of complaining and blaming everyone but themselves... that's a sure sign of being singaporean.

I felt like a Malaysian watching that game.

Silver but still a proud feeling for Malaysians.

Had a long discussion with a few friends over this subject, concluded that:

~ most of the resentment is not targeting at the foreign imported sports talents
~ the doubt has always been on an unidentifiable quick fix to a longer term problem
~ to some, akin to buying degrees from overseas universities
~ population size limitation is not a reason for lack of sports talent, discussed before.
~ high costs of living is not a reason too. Else we cannot compare to Swiss and yet cannot compare to Brazil too. Excuses.
~ non sports politicians running the show could be a reason. Wrong KPI. Quick fix. Quick results.

Can we have a Lee Chong Wei?

We already have a Remy Ong !!!

It has never happen to me before..A true born and bred Singaporean..cheering for Malaysian Badminton Lee CW last night. I remembered I will never do that in ASEAN or ASIAN games swimming meet even though Singaporean did participate in that particular event. Or to support the Malaysia football team playing against another nation. In many ways, we were rivals in the sporting scene.

But strangely last night, I rooted hard for him to win. Cheering every point he scored and every cross court smash he made. It is not because he was the underdog against the mighty Chinese who swapped every badminton medals in sight. I would have rooted hard for the koreans or the Danish or whoever who played against the Chinese if it was the underdog mentality. I did not!

Somehow deep inside, many fellow Singaporeans feel the connection. Found the answer to what a true sporting spirit is all about. That every sweat and pain on Lee CW face represented the Malaysian community and its people 100%. I don't think ONE single Malaysian in the cty was not proud of him last night!

To quote the late Deng Xiaoping - 'who cares what cat, black or white, as long as it can catch a rat, it is a good cat.'

Feng is a good and talented sportsman who put in alot of sacrifice and time in her stint to reach where she is today. Above all, she is a human who displays world-class fitness and finesse. That is what the spirit of Olympics is about, to celebrate sports achievement of a human being.

Nationality is should be a secondary issue. To me, it is propaganda for governments to show how impressive their nations are. It kinda miss the point on individual achievements.

My family all Sporean were rooting for Chong Wei and I guess we prefer Malaysian Chinese to PRC...but I do like PRC girls with 34C 24 34.

+1. By the time she come backs from London, she may have three Olympic medals to her name... that's a lot! I don't think she cares which country she won them for.

They can make more money than being in the government in the first place.......

No doubt about it. But then not all of them can be a good minister. Well it happens everywhere like we expect to have a few bad apples in a box of good apples. I just hope they spend more resources to groom local talent.
