Hi zag,
For mine, the DRL is both the rings and the main light bulb.
For Audi, I guess it is the LED but I'm not sure about this.....:shakemyb:
I just realised that is no standard for DRL, ha ha:

Indeed, the Audi's DRL are the LED lights below the headlights:

And the E92's DRL:

No la, DRL only on the Angels Eyes and the LEDs from the back light.
Oh, I see. For my E90 LCI, I noticed that the DRL is the angel eyes, plus the low beam headlight which is slightly less bright than the normal low beam headlight which I switch on at night. I thought it may be due to lower voltage being used. Or it could be the LEDs from the back light you are mentioning about?

I think you are not wrong for the E92 DRL. From the pics posted by JavierK, it concurred with your descriptions. What I have described is for my E60 LCI and only the Angel Eyes, no low beam. And the Back light I mentioned is the LEDs from the same place as the Brake Light. My bad ......

... DRL when set thru i-drive.. the ring only will illuminate extra bright for daytime contrast.. dun think the low beam will be on.

for angel eyes + low beam perhaps it is dusk light setting.. the angel eyes are not at full brightness but i dun remember if low beam will be on.. CP30..how do you turn on yr DRL?

2 gals, "A" & "B" were betting. "A" said I dare to flip up my shirt and show my boobs to any car that passes by.
"B" said: If you dare to do it, I treat you to a good and expensive diinner.
So "A" walk down the street and waiting for the 1st car to come by.
From far, she saw one coming her way and yes she flipped up her shirt!! The car suddenly went straight to her and knock her down.
The driver immediately stop and came out to see if she was injured. Amazingly and a miracle, "A" only had some minor scratches.
The driver asked: "Are you ok?"
"A" said: "I was dazed by your bright head lights and don't know where to run when your car came for me."
The Driver said: Ya! Mee too !!

Re: What are daytime running lights?

so this DRL is not available in pre LCI models?

heh heh, i don't have idrive. But really, my DRL not only has angel eyes on, low beam light also on. Very bright, other drivers think I kiasi and kiasu, drive during day also must on headlight. So I turned off the DRL!

Chim. Dusk light setting. Not in my manual ha ha.

I turn on/off my DRL via a roller kind of button on my signal indicator (left of steering wheel). Me no idrive. Sob sob....

I see, that's how the confusion arises. Different BMW models got different types of DRL, ha ha. E90 same as E92.

Re: What are daytime running lights?

I've seen some cars having headlights that turn on automatically when it's dark, for example, under a bridge. Is that part of a DRL function? Whereby they Increase in intensity when the surrounding gets dark?

DRL is on all the time irregardless once it is set to ON... in the old day when fancy ornamental lighting such ring light; LED aka Audi etc..have not been invented ... DRL basically full headlite on.. my experience in US on rental cars are that all cars (GM; Ford etc) just have it headlight on all the time for whatever reason at one point in time.

For bimmer ...auto mode switches on headlight when the sensor tracked a low lighting ambient such as tunnel; carpark; overcast skies; dusk.. yr garage...

Dusk light = one notch turn clockwise before full light on the headlight switch....
