What causes excessive amounts of wheel balancers

just installed tires and rims today...

wheels are OEM wheels therefore i know balancers should be quite little...

but mine turns out to be ALOT... one whole row...

i was wondering what caused this... could it probably the tire shop mount the tires wrongly?

or the balancing machine is off?

im pretty sure its not meant to be like that... and i have seen alot of aftermarket rims by the bros here run on a whole army of balancers as well , on the contrary rims and wheels that came fitted with tire and balanced from US tire shops i have seen alot less balancers..

i have seen HRE P40 with just ONE 5 gram balancers mounted on 20inches dunlops btw..

is there something amiss that singapore shops are not aware of regarding of installing tires and wheels ?

and also is it dangerous ? and whats the explanation to this? hope some expert here can explain... thanks

Where did you get your tires changed? One famous shop in AMK area always put "dragon" as in a super long row of balancing weight on rims. You might wan to bring your wheels to another tyre shop to do balancing again. Remove all the balancing weights before checking the wheel balance.

Some tyre shops like to do balancing with the existing weights on. I wont say who but I have experienced it for myself twice....

was told there are colour marks on new tires which supposed to be aligned certainly with the valve cap on the wheels ...

i think some tire shops is not even aware of this...


i remembered theres a thread on this someone has a dragon balancers as well and managed to get it fixed... forgot what was his problem



well on the brightside ...i probably got the cheapest P zeros in singapore from this shop after checking around....

That's correct, Terry, the colour dots....

The yellow dot is known as the weight mark, marking the lighter part of the tyre. A tyre cannot be perfectly uniform in weight..... This yellow dot should be aligned to the valve stem on your wheel, since the yellow dot marks a "light spot" on your tyres. But aligning the yellow dot to the valve stem, the wheel balancing will minimise the amount of leads needed in wheel balancing.

The red dot is more complex. No way all tyres can be perfectly circular, so each tyre will have a different high and a low spot. Manufacturers check for these spots using harmonic frequency.... the high spot is marked with a red dot (high spot = the first harmonic curve from the tyre wobble hits its high point), that's where the tyre's high spot is. Not all tyres have this red dot.. But this red dot has to do more with fitment on the wheel rather than balancing.

i just change tyres too, insist the shop to clean off the dots, tot want some paint stains. very ugly.

Put simply, yellow dots to valve stem on wheels, red to white mark/dimple on wheels (not always applicable)......

you statement here is based on the assumption the OE wheels and tyres are perfect,so any thing you think is not right ,the problem all goes to the installation?
If your car has no balancing issue show that the shop machine is OK
let me tell you something, best party to answer your question is BMW
you just simply go to any ALL NEW BMW (factory fitted wheels) you will be shock to see lots of OE fitted wheels carried heavy balancing weight.
If your wheels does not have any vibration issue after any tyre and wheels replacement it means the installation was properly done.
Why some wheels has less balacing weight attached is light weight rim ,because this wheels is so light so the out of balance is relatively lower than those heavier weight rim like OEM BMW .
I believe best is so long the wheels are perfectly balance rather less weight seen but still out of balanced ( Life is NOT perfect).
Just for you info I was shock to know Michelin tyre does not show any Red or Yellow Dot on the sidewall.

Kenn, I just changed a set of Hankook tyres not too long ago, there were no red nor yellow dots which I am accustomed to whenever I change new tyres.

Does this mean the manufacturer did not bother to show the high and low weight spots???
